    gardening advice needed...

A couple of questions, im going to turn over a small patch of my back garden, its currently covered in gravel on top of visqueen and used to be grass underneith but its been covered up for about 5 years, how fertile will the soil be underneith?
I have ordered a compost bin but havent had the chance to do any so what is the cheapest way to quickly fertilise approx 6 sqm of soil?.

Secondly, i keep chickens, can i use the chicken manure to fertilise the soil? they live in a run so can i just add it directly to the soil when i clean them out?

Thirdly, I need quite a bit of compost wheres the cheapest place to buy it?

    cheers.

chesso used to have a long standing gardening thread here, jsut looked at its been expired but might be worth asking her.
Not sure what the soil will be like underneith, but you can add chicken manure to the soil to fertilise it, you can also Wee on it i would add the manure and wee to the soil and turn it over with a folk to mix it in and then add chicken manure as and when you need it by just putting it ontop of the soil and letting it mix in naturally, hope that helps a little

    * Thanks Kaks26 i went to the thread that was going for ages and saw it was expirsed but now there is a new one lol

The link above is chesso's thread - its a new one she started for Jan 2011. Still the same people in it though who are all friendly and helpful so I'm sure there will be plenty of advice for what you are looking for.

Wee on the soil then turn it over HaHa I would not wee on it once you have plants in but its ok to wee in a big watering can with water and water your plants with it

Im growing veg so i will give the wee thing a miss! it doesnt sit right. (but for some reason im happy to put chicken poop in the soil?)

lol rich you are SO right! Mind you its not been too bad this past week and I've managed to get out and do my pots at long last. When my fingers finally defrost I will take a pic for chesso's thread.

Chuckles - no problem, think she's going to make a new one at the beginning of each year, probably makes sense rather than having to trawl through years of tips.

Chicken manure is a great fertiliser but be very careful as it is very hot (ie strong) a little goes a long way, we keep 8 chooks and from the amount we get only a fraction gets used. Mix it in well.
