    GATEWAY LAPTOP WONT BOOT UP

    Hi all
    i have a GATEWAY MT 6825B LAPTOP
it froze so i turned off the laptop and rebooted it but to no avail.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IS THE LAPTOP POWER LIGHT COMES ON AND THE HARD DRIVE LIGHT COMES ON BUT THEN GOES OUT
FAN KICKS IN AND GOES OFF
(but the same happens on the other laptop so this must be normal)
luckly enough me and the girlfriend have the same laptop
so the first thing i tried was swapping over hard drives but same happened.
next i swapped over the battery and still the same happened
swapped over the 2 memory modules and still the same(even tried it with just 1 ram stick)
with all 3 things swapped over the non working laptop still not working and the working one still works so rules out hdd,ram and battery
was getting some freezing where the icons on the desktop went blocky for a about half a second then fine. but that happened months before so could be a pointer or could just be coinsidance

i have looked at where the covers come off underneath and can only see one fan
on the broken laptop the fan spins on bootup but then stops
so i checked this on the working laptop and the same happens
TRIED TAKING OFF THE WHOLE BOTTOM OF THE LAPTOP CASE BUT LOOKS TOO COMPLEXED FOR ME.
I have since swapped over the memory modules
so the things i have tried are as follows
(as i have 2 laptops exactly the same)
    swapped over batteries NO JOY
swapped over hard drives NO JOY
swapped over both 512mb memory modules NO JOY
and the working laptop still works with the broken laptops 1 gig of memory and hard drive swapped over,
the hard drive light comes up on booting up but goes off at the time the screen should come up saying
press f2 for xxxxxxx press f10 for xxxxxxxx (cant remember what they say)
    but doesnt get passed that.
    any help would be great

sorry if i have repeted certain things but just tried getting everything in i can to give you the full picture
    many thanks
    regards
    scoot

EDIT : ITS RUNING GENUINE VISTA AND IS A DUAL CORE CENTRINO DUO

sounds like it's over-heated, so probably a cooling issue, how long have you left it before trying?

    it happened months ago mate
it went back in the box and in the wardrode
although tried it a few weeks later still the same
i bought a gateway off fleabay for about £60 delivered spares and repairs(had cracked tft)
incase it was the mobo but is a couple of models below, but all the ports/drives are in the same place, think only diff i can see is the hdd on the spares or repaire one is ide and the gateway is sata (if thats what they are called)

there's no much left you can test, could be possible water damage (coke is a common one, it doesnt always kill it straight away, can lie on the mobo for a while, slow drying out and rotting the solders...

my money would be on the mobo failing its self test and shutting down, if you can get it apart, just leave the mobo with cpu and heatsink plugged in, with either the display panel connected, or monitor via the vga port (presuming it has one). Then try powering it on...

the fact that you have swapped tested the memory rules that out, and you say that your unit was frezzin from time to time icons went blockey , i think your onboard video chip has overheated. sometimes in these units they have a small heatsink sitting over the video chip. that may have come away, ( if you move the unit from side to side do you hear rattlin ) if so it could be that heatsink. you say that that hdd light comes on, does it flashes for a while (as if it was loadin windows ) but the screen is blank, if so then Im affraid you motherboard is faulty and will need replacing.

    cheers

    thanks for the advice mate
will have to get it out the wardrobe tomorrow and have a look
i think the hdd light does flash exactly the same as the working one
at the point when the screen should say
    PRESS F2 T0 XXXXXXX
    PRESS F10 TO XXXXXXX
(XXXXXX = TO SET UP AND BIOS IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY)
on the working one after the above the hdd light comes back on flashing as it boots vista
but on the broken one the hdd light stays off and nothing
like i say i will take it out the wardrobe tommorrow and doulbe chechk what you have said
i have bought a laptop with a broken screen that one being a MA2 where as mine is a MA7 (i think that referes to the mobo)
all the buttons/ports/usb/memory card slot and the pcmcia slot are in the same place on the ma2 as the ma7
i did notice the ma2 has an ide hdd and the ma7has a sata hdd
dont know if there is any other differences
the ma7 is immaculate and the ma2 i bought off ebay isnt in great nick
originally wanted to put the screen from mine in the one i got off fleabay but as the condition isnt great wuld rather swap the mobos over if poss and it is the mobo that is the problem
    cheers pal

the unit with the cracked screen is not the same mobo or cpu as your broken unit ,
sent me the model no's of both unit, I just want to see what cpu's are in both units

    model numbers are as follows
the ma7 is a MT 6825b WITH CENTRINO DUAL CORE
    and the ma2 is a MX 6635b with a celeron i think

the below info is relating to the 2 MA7 IDENTICAL LAPTOPS
I get no writing on the screen at all on the broken one
on the working one after you turn it on
after a few seconds it says
    GATEWAY
    press f2
    press f10
but nothing on the broken one
but it looks like the broken one is getting to that point as the hdd lights are the same on both laptops (ma7 identical laptops) both hdd lights go off both laptop fans stop, the broken one hangs the working one hdd light start flashing again and fan starts back up
    cheers pal

when i lokked at them both but i suppose thats only physical appearance
but the casing on the ma2 isnt brillaint and looks tatty
