Hey guys. Unlucky I need to change my gear box. I can get the part second hand but how much do garages usually charge for the work itself? Thank you

Somewhere between £200 and £50,000.

Is it a fiesta or a bugatti?

    Too many variables.

For starters, what car, model, auto/manual

Do you mean you intend to get a secondhand gearbox from a breakers yard and pay a garage to swap it with yours?
If so, its risky, how do you know the secondhand one will be any better than yours?

I paid £80 for mine off ebay (the garage told me to go that route as it wasn't worth the cost of a refurb or new that they'd get). Cost me £130 for them to fit, worked fine for years after. Sometimes it's worth getting a new clutch and waterpump too (at least in my old focus) as it's way cheaper labour wise as they need the gearbox removing to fit. I use an honest local garage and just told them to do them if it needed it, they checked them out and said it was fine so didn't bother.

Friends gearbox went in their Kia sportage (supposedly there is a known weakness in them). Dealer estimated 3-4K. Crazy.

You're best bet is to find a a low mileage sourced from a breakers and get a well reviewed independent specialist or good known mechanic to fit. Change the clutch at the same time as this is effectively a service part.

What model and engine car? Some gearboxes can be changed in 3 hours some take up to 16 (old mondeo when subframe had to be dropped)

I have to agree with this. It's just not worth it.
When you get one fitted new, you have a warranty and peace of mind.
You might save a few hundred quid, but have to do the whole thing again in a year.
Also, lots of garages will refuse to fit a second hand one sourced from elsewhere, for that very reason. They don't want to fit a questionable part that might fail, only for you to come back later and blame them when it fails.
They have to cover themselves in the legal sense.
If they fitted it and it failed a few weeks later, you could take them to a small claims court. They won't take the risk.

I know because I actually asked several garages if they would fit a second hand transmission on one of my old motors. The answer was resoundingly 'no'

Surely that depends on the value of the car?
If the cars worth £700 surely you wouldn't spend £4000 fitting a new gearbox?

I wouldn't go for used (as mentioned above the garages around here wouldn't fit used parts anyway), but I also wouldn't go for new as a gearbox can be surprisingly expensive (here's looking at you VW DSG!!). There's enough gearbox places that do reconditioned boxes, you don't pay the price of new but you do get at least some sort of warranty.

Here's a random Google result as an example. ajonestransmissions.co.uk/

There are also some common gearbox faults that this sort of place would also know about, if you talk to them they might be able to just replace the required parts and save the cost of a full gearbox.

Continuing with the example of DSG boxes by the way, there are entire companies dedicated to just working on DSG and will also be able to give you good advice.

If you can find me a roadworthy car worth £700 in which a replacement transmission is worth £4000, I'll give you a lifetime supply of free air.
As I've said, any garage with any sense will refuse to fit an outsourced second hand transmission anyway.
It's not worth the trouble it could potentially cause them.

If your car is worth £700 and the transmission fails, it's time for a new car.

Plenty of second hand boxes go for over a grand, not sure what price you would think they go for brand new, but there won't be much change from £4k including fitting.

Dealer quotes on the semi auto box for a 2010 3008 supplied and fitted are more than that, as an example. Or you could get a used one supplied and fitted for around £600. The cars probably worth £1500 max.
So scrap a £1500 car and get a few hundred quid towards another car
Pay over £4000 to get it fixed and never have any chance of getting your money back
Pay £600 to get it fixed.

Plenty of garages will fit second hand parts, I know of at least a dozen round here that would fit a box no problem. As long as you sign a declaration that they are not responsible for the customer supplied part failing, it doesn't increase their liability at all.

There are loads of old cars on the road not worth as much as a brand new gearbox would cost, which are perfectly roadworthy. It completely depends on the car value as to which way to go, if it's worth £20k then I would be unlikely to put a used box in, if it's worth £2k then I wouldn't put a new one in.

Find me a roadworthy car worth £700 with a gearbox worth anywhere near £4K. (you can't)

I changed a transmission in a fiesta, it was £750 brand new, fitted. Similar price in an escort and a corrola.

Most garages won't fit outsourced second hand transmissions

its not 1985 anymore, find me a brand new fiesta gearbox today for £750 even without fitting and I'll be amazed. The last Escort was produced in 2003. The cheapest reconditioned fiesta gearbox on ebay is about £550 delivered, many are over a grand, so you have no chance of getting a brand new one supplied and fitted for £750
You keep saying that about garages not fitting a second hand unit, got a source for that information, or is it just made up in your head?
I don't have access to dealer pricing so no I won't start ringing round and asking for prices to prove you wrong, but you are welcome to ring Peugeot for the semi auto box and get a price for what I used as an example above if you are bored.

I got a brand new one fitted in a fiesta about three years ago.
I also called around garages to ask about second hand fitting and every single one refused. The only instance in which they will fit a second hand transmission is if they have one which has been reconditioned and tested in-house.
Anecdotal, but that's what happened. The car was only worth 2K at the time, so if it were much more than that, I'd have just scrapped it and bought new.

You don't have to believe me. I'm really not bothered. If your car is worth £700 and the transmission fails. Get a new car.

and i know at least a dozen garages who will fit a used one, no problem.
Where did you get a brand new gearbox for a fiesta for about £500 from? I'll buy some and resell them on ebay if thats the price, considering refurbs are going for double that.

so where can you get brand new gearboxes from for that price?
Here are the reconditioned ones currently on ebay, out of 23 the cheapest is £535 for an exchange unit, more than half are over £1000.
