getting very old bank statements?

in light of the bank charge reclaims going on my girlfriend thinks she has a good shout to get some fairly substantial bank charges refunded but how do you get bank statements going back that far form tha bank and should she have to pay to get them or are they legally bound to provide them especially given that any legal case/claim would require them?

you can get bank statements from as far back as 6 years ago, call your bank and request your last 6 years copies they will charge you £10 you then go through and highlight all your charges and then submitt your claim

I think the bank has to issue them when requested but may charge for this, although if i remember rightly they are not allowed to charge more than £10 so even if theres only one or two charges you can claim back you are still a winner!

You can request back as far as 6 years ago - that's how long banks (and businesses) are legally obliged to keep records for (it's to do with the Inland Revenue).

most banks charge for the statements becuase they know what your after, nationwide tried to charge me £5 per statment, which if you consider you get a monthly statement and want to claim back upto 6 years its £360.

If she's registered for online banking then try there first, mine were all held online and I could download at will.

template letters here for you to send to reclaim your bank charges back

all claims are put on hold at the minute, the next key date is in july in the courts, until then no one will pay out and even in july they may still appeal, altho it wont do any harm in putting in a claim now, in the hope the courts find in our favour

our bank HSBC tried to charge us £1.50 per sheet of paper which would have cost a fortune for 6 years worth of statements but she was kind enough to tell us that you can go back 6 years online which we didn't realise so we did it that way instead.

Got almost £3000 back

is it only £10 for as many statemtns as you wish?

she is with Barclays/abbey and apparently she can only view a hnadful about 6months iirc)

THANKS FOR EVERYONES HELP SO FAR!!!! ;-)

was that before or after they put claims on hold?:)

The £10 charge is not for statements. As pointed out above they can charge you whatever they want for duplicate statements.

Your girlfriend needs to write a letter to ask them to tell her "How much have I paid in Unauthorised usage fees" during the last 6 years?, or whatever they call them.

If they send satements it's a bonus, but they don't need to.

i agree with Simon Templar - you don't want 6 years worth of statements, you want to ask them for a list of all charges on your account over the last six years. much less paper to wade through!!!

not sure if thats aimed at me or not but if it is then it was well before they put them on hold. Can't remember the exact dates but it must be about 2 years ago now back when I forst noticed it was possible over on MSE.

you get charged for everything..my dad get charged per cheque with his bank so needless to say he claimed alot back over the years as he does everything by check for his business. Also the one and only time he has ever gone overdrawn in his life (supplies can out before payment was put in) they charged him alot for being over drawn for all of 2 hours.

But i can see your point of racking up 3000 worth of charges the first thing you would need to establish is if they own a business because espec in the first few years until your established this amount is nothing in fees.

Also op the amount you get charged per statement will vary but from my experience with banks if you ask them nicely to fax it through the may not charge or charge very little.

Also dont tell them you want it to try claim charges back if they ask you cos then they are likely to hit you with a bill for the full amount
