    GFX Card

Can anyone advise me on a decent gfx card? Looking to spend a max of £80. I will use it to play games (not anything as trying as crysis, but would like to play lesser games on full detail/resolution) and watch HD/B-Ray movies etc.

Anything you need to know about my computer I can tell you, but im not sure what is relevant when choosing a gfx card. Many thanks!

Is that something more appropraite for overclocking? I am only planning on running at stock speeds. Also, (and this may just be me being simple) but my system uses DDR2 RAM not DDR3 and the gfx card has DDR3 embedded somewhere in its desrip - does that mean its not compatitable?

    Rep left all the same,
    thanks!

At £80 there's also the Radeon 4850 which is a similar speed to the GTS 250.

The fact that your RAM is DDR2 doesn't matter. You can get Gfx cards with DDR5 now, and they'll still work with your DDR2 RAM.

Yep, very similar cards, doesn't really matter which to go for, I couldn't find the 4850 on Scan, that's all.

Thanks guys for your help and patience! So is there any difference at all between between the two cards? Don't know which one to order!

Assuming you're not connecting it up to a multi-monitor or 3d setup I'd say nVidia probably has the slight edge due to their PhysX support which doesn't have that many games supporting it but I guess is probably nice to have.

Not 3D, but sometimes I might have two monitors running (one for word documents while I work on an older monitor, and the other for a movie on my good monitor). Does this change anything?

Not a single extra monitor no.

Also another question, if you don't mind: it says (under chipset features) that it uses DirectX10 - isn't directX11 the newest one, that w7 uses?

Windows doesn't use DirectX, but 11 is certainly the newest that Vista and Windows 7 support.

The 4850 and GTS 250 are DirectX 10 and don't support DirectX 11. DX11 cards are only just being released, the ATI ones were out a couple of months ago, the nVidia ones are expected within the next couple of months.

This means that 1. They're currently poor value for money next to the older ones. You either settle for the slower 5670 or pay £20 more for the similarly performing 5750 and 2. It's often the case that cards for a newer version of directX, especially budget ones like the 5670, don't see that much action since by the time it's features start getting used (it takes years to develop a game) they're too slow to run the games.

As you weren't even interested in the already two year old Crysis (which any £80 card will have no problem running btw) I didn't think you'd be bothered about DirectX 11. If you are then wait a couple of months until nVidia release their DirectX 11 cards before marking any decision.

Thanks, you've been so helpful! Before I take the plunge and get the GTS250 from Scan, I've been told that when they release the new line of cards (someone said march?) the current line will drop in price. Any idea how drastic this change will be? Just don't want to buy something now that will be half the price in a month!

Good card, very similar to the GTS 250 - =on∏[3256]=on"]Comparison. The GTS 250 is cheaper though.

As it appears to be the only 512mb version of the 5750 on the market I'd avoid it.

Okay - ordered the GTS250 (like you originally suggested!), thanks a lot! What cable do I need to buy to link it to the HDMI port on my monitor? Would ]this do the trick?

Does the graphics card have HDMI?

    yup

Well then obviously a HDMI to HDMI lead would work.

I was just checking that that was what it was

    Thanks :-D
