Giant African land snails, Got some questions

Right, fancy getting a giant african land snails for a "jokey" christmas present for my sister, as she rents a house and is not allowed any pets.

I know that they are hermaphrodites, and decide to lay about 8000000million eggs a year and you need to freeze them to get rid of them, but if i just get one baby one off ebay would that be ok and they wouldnt have babies? Its just i read about the "Love dart" and it can stay in them for a while.

If anyone has any advice i would be grateful.

a pets for life not just for an xmas 'joke'

giant african land snails have been known to self fertilise, although it is rare. you can keep one snail on its own but they do prefer company. dont forget to buy a heatmat for the tank as they will need one this time of year!

how big do these bad boys grow i'm intrigued

depends on what species. the most common and easy to keep is achatina fulica. these grow to about 4-5 inches. however i have an albino achatina reticulata who is just over 6 inches in shell length. achatina achatina or 'tiger snails' have been known to grow to 12 inches!

my son has two of these as a class pet at school, they have to bring them home at weekends ! I really wouldn't get one as a joke present as they still need looking after, cleaning out, fresh fruit and veg every day and a cuttlefish for calcium for there shells.

how about a gogo hamster instead?

How would you explain a snail-trail like one of these mothers? :w00t:

It isnt a "jokey" present, she has had pets all her life but since renting this new house she cannot have one.

But i see a bit of a difference between owning a dog as a pet and a snail.

I didnt mean jokey as in "haha, look its a snail. now you can get rid of it"

Is it hard to keep cleaning out the eggs if there are two?

i did have one when i was a kid, tbh they are bit boring even the teacher at my kids school is trying to get rid of the class ones and they are proving hard to re-home! My friend rents and wasn't allowed pets but asked of she could get a cat and the landlord said ok, maybe if she misses having a pet she could try this first?

they can go unnoticed as the snails are good at hiding them. if you want to get her 2 maybe you could get 2 different species? achatina fulica and achatina reticulata will live in similar conditions ie temperature and humidity. you will need a bigger tank to keep 2
