You don't need any. They are only for show / tradition really. Most godparents make promises they don't intend to keep.

Dont think theres any restrictions TBH. My wife and i are godparents to our friends son. They didn't chose any of their family members.

Or you could let him grow up and choose his own religion?

Traditionally isn't it two men and one women if you have a boy and two women and one man if you have a girl?
And you can choose anyone you like relatives or friends .

The traditional way is .if a little boy is being christened - 2 godfathers and 1 godmother, if a little girl - 2 godmothers and 1 godfather.

You don't have to choose family, it's a free choice.

    Hope this helps

And they have to be Italians dressed in black suits if you do have them.

i'd like a fairy godmother - any out there?

Hello! I wanted my first child christened in my catholic church but had'nt been for a few years! In most of the familly ones I attended through the years we normally had 2 men and 2 women. When I spoke to the cannon he told me only 1 + 1 and at least 1 had to be Catholic ( he was very strict ) After some stressfull negotiation he let me have 3 as I had allready told the godparents to be. I am sure it was just because he was new to my church and also a higher rank than a priest. The previous priests let us have what we wanted but I think it is best to ask first to be safe!

I'm Catholic too, and I was christened only when I was 10 years old, a week before my first communion. Yes, it was a bit late for the traditions.
But the good thing is that I've had the chance to choose my godparents myself (I've chosen between my parents friends the couple I liked most) and I can tell you this is a very successfull experience that I would recommend. I'll do the same with my future child(ren).

i thought as much, but atm, we have

1 gf & 1 gm (friends, from my side)
    2 gf (from partners side)

but i forget about someone who I would like to ask, a GF so that would make

    3GM & 2GF - this that OTT?

Why would anybody want to impose their religion on a child?

I think there is no restriction about number of godparents. Best is to talk to the priest:thumbsup:

we are both catholic, and have found catholic schools (in this area) give the best education than any other... each to their own I say. Dont wanna start a fight

I don't think it's imposing anyway- I was christened but don't,as an adult, class myself as a Christian. It's about giving the child a start to that way of life should they wish to continue it once they are old enough to make their own decisions.
I often wonder though- do godparents have to believe in the religion the child's being christened into, or is it just about guiding them on the right path in general??
All the best for the Christening

think traditionally its two of the sex the child is and one of the other
