Going online advice (Xbox 360)

Help, thinking about going online with my 360, but no idea what to do, what to get. We have Sky broadband, so that should be ok - I dont wanna spend out on a wireless thingy coz they seem to cost a fair bit, so can I hard wire it, if so what wire do i need - can someone send me a link to a certain online auction site listing.... Would need to be about 10m long. Assuming I then plug one end into my 360 the other into the broadband box, what next ?

Main reason I want to go online is that Ive heard that microsoft send out updates, how will I get all the previous updates that i have missed, will this update automatically once Im online ?

Im thinking about getting the HD drive, but again ive heard that theres an update to prevent it juddering, how do i get this update ?

Your help/advice would be appreciated.

You just need an ethernet cable and plug one end into your 360 and one into your router... You also need a live subscription to be able to join xbox live

Once you're logged in then a wee bit on the right hand side of the screen will flash up telling you an update's required then you just follow the on screen instructions

What you need is a cat5 cable and for 10m you should be looking at about £2 - £5 max

Also the updates I would imagine you get once you connect to xbox online. ( dont have an xbox so I cant say for sure).

Do I need a straight or cross-over type cable ?

I bought a long ethernet cable (10m) from an Amazon reseller for a few quid.

You'll need Live gold as well if you intend to play online, if you have a premium (with HDD) you should get 3 30 day gold trials on seperate new silver gamertags.

If you don't have a premium then cough ]. cough, but you didn't hear that from me. :whistling:

It's not really a long term thing, but you can do a bit of gaming while saving for a 12month sub.

Just looked through the little booklet that came with my 360, it says before going online create a gamer profile by visiting xbox.com, so I just did that - but Ive been playing games for months prior to going on line, so Ive already built up a load of gamer points, how do I link these points to this newly created gamer profile or cant I ?

what router would you recommend im currently on AOL and have a standard modem which wont let me connect to xbox live it says DSN number failed on the system check. I have been told to get a new router.
