TK Maxx is your best bet... don't go overboard in case you hate it!

EDIT : It also depends where you're going...

Tamworth Snowdome - You can get away with Jeans.
France / Italy / Canada / USA - Normal Snowboarding gear
Above the Arctic Circle - Consider something a little warmer or putting thermals on under your snowboarding gear if you're likely to be spending a lot of time stood around or lying on your a**e (which as a beginner you might be...)

Wrist guards, protective shorts, jacket and trousers, helmet are the basics

Have a look around a Decathlon if you have one close. Masses of ski wear and equipment starting at quite low prices.

Go to the TK Maxx at Kittybrewster, they have a few bits and pieces

Impact shorts are essential as far as I'm concerned. You WILL be on your backside a lot whether it be falling or sitting around in the snow. They'll help against knocks and bruises as well as keep the cold from your behind :-D

Thumbs up for TK Maxx here too.

I would definitely recommend wrist guards. It's very easy to sprain wrists as you fall. Good gloves are essential too.

What are the slopes like at Lecht? Anywhere near comparable to European ones? Much powder?

Possibly, I bought mine online. I use Burton RED modular (with removable pads) shorts, but Dainese are superb too.

I couldnt really tell you as i have never been before but i know alot of people who love it.

Where are you boarding? You having a lesson first?

You will need the following basics:
    Ski Trousers
Ski Jacket (Pref. But you can get away with just a hoody if going to a snowdome)
Ski Gloves (Or thick waterproof gloves)
    Hat
    Thick Socks

    Add ons can include:
Protective gear, i.e. Bum boards, Wrist Guards. But to be honest its your fist go, I doubt you'll be speeding down the slope proffessionally so you will be going nice and slow and a good thing about the body, it that it can protect itself when you do fall over as a near stop. Because you'll be scared of falling over, you'll be looking out for it all the time thus falling over with minimal injury.

I find that it hurts to fall now then when I first started. I've been doing ot for 4 years so am alot faster and you know when you've hit the ice at speed.

Sports Direct ](Link) are the cheapest for ski wear. You can get Trousers and Jackets at £40 for the lot, or £20 each.
I wouldn't recommend wearing jeans. Its your first time and you will fall over and get wet. Soggy Jeans are never nice. Plus even Tamworth is cold (I'm going tonight, Membership baby!)

Sport Direct also do Waterproof gloves for £6.99

Hope this helps. Plus if you have time, browse ebay for cheap ski wear as people have bought all the gear, gone, hated it and trying to get rid of their stuff quickly and cheaply.

Lessons are the way forward! I wish I had one, I started straight away on a mountain, with my ex bf who was teaching me, but on the ski lift up we had an argument and he boarded off and left me at the top. Hell of a lesson. But I was determined to do it and now I'm at the same level he is and hes been doing it alot longer.

The waterproof should be fine. Just stick a hoody under it and base layers for warmth.

I would suggest makes such as Solomon, Westbeach and Oakley. But they are too expensive. If your not going to an alpine mountain untill next winter then I seriously suggest getting the £20 trousers from Sports Direct. You don't want to splash out straight away. Untill you hit an alpine mountain where you will probably need better kit with better breathability, warmth and waterproofness (Is that even a word?) you have time to shop around for the best deals and save up for it.

Well thats what I did. Even the Sports direct kit was good on the mountain. All I needed was an extra base layer (Long johns are so very sexy! lol) and made sure my kit dried out over night. I used this kit in temps that was -10C. I dont think Lecht is this cold, but I'd still base layer everything anyway (Long johns/Leggings Vest with long sleeve t-shirts). Oh and from a girly point of view, Personnally I don't bother with a sports bra I use a nice all round supported bra that keeps me all tucked in a tidy. But it's up to you. Plus I find sports bras annoying.

Snowboarding is an expensive hobby, so is skydiving. Yes my OH thought I was a nut, untill I took him for his first boarding lesson and he loved it! When the weather gets better, he's doing a jump with me. But besides that, unless you have the money to splash out straight away, then go for it. I on the other hand couldn't afford it so worked my way up and very happy with the results.

But your gonna have fun either way!

The trespass jacket will be fine, just stick a fleece under it if you think you'll get cold. Wouldn't bother getting overly branded stuff for a first attempt and echo what the person above said, wrist guards and the like will be unnecessary for a first attempt...

I've got myself excited too! I would like to go to Lecht (it looks pretty amazing!), but unfortunantly from nottingham its an 8 hour drive/train or £200 by plane. The alps are cheaper for me.

Actually Goggles. I've had a look on the lecht site and atm there is abit of snow. And it can get to -5. So I would advise some cheap goggles or maybe a pair of sports sunglasses (the goggles might be cheaper) Incase it does snow during your lesson. Its just to keep the snow out of your eyes.

Can't you hire stuff there? you can at Aviemore??

The nearest I've ever come to actual bodily harm was bizarrely down to a helmet (which I'd worn to keep heavy snow out of my eyes) it was -30 (or thereabouts) and the combination of the moisture on my breath plus the outside temperature caused the sodding thing to simultaneously mist up and freeze up... couldn't open the lid as it was froze solid so ended up hurtling down a mountain literally blind...

In hindsight it must have hilarious for everyone else watching me career away like frank spencer...

Goggles can mist up like this too, people tend to forget that the top of the goggle has to be over laping your hat to allow air circulation.

I've never worn helmets. The biggest crash I've had is when I had my goggles ontop of my forehead and accidently caught an edge and pitched forward so hard that the goggles took most of the impact and smashed into smitherines. If the goggles had been on my face it would have been my forehead over the ice instead.

On another note I tend to use reflective sunglasses, goggles tend to annoy me as well! Hence why I wasnt wearing them in one of my biggest crash.

It's not actually that cold to be honest - especially once you get moving, learning to snowboard can be fairly exhausting as well, with the sun shining and reflecting off the ice you''ll soon pick up some heat... probably not enough that want to wear a t-shirt (people from the north east aside) but you might well want to unzip your coat or your fleece for a bit...
