yeah its ok just leave a bit of room till you get used to it also when i went you could turn right at red lights. bit weird i know but its into the flow of traffic. also on freeways you stay in your lane no slow or fast lane so people overtake both sides

you will find that a decent Sat Nav will help you

should be fine, u'll be on the other side of the road too to it wont cos any problems like restricted view tht it would here

Thanks for you advice

wide streets but on certain "stop" signals (red for you and me) you can turn right, too much stress, taxis are cheap in florida compared to other parts of US

bit more info here like dont over take stopped school buses

do they not supply them with the vehicle these days on a hire basis, 1st time we went i was the same as you,but to be honest i enjoyed driving over there, plus the car we had was an auto, which was a plus.

have a nice time aswell

Pop over to France in the morning and have a practise. :-D

Don't forget Golden Corale!

yeah only 19 quid and a free crate of wine

You will find it fine, just go at a steady spead. All the roads are wider so more space and time.
After a day it will be a doddle.

Best advice...... to help you remember your lefts from your rights - especially when turning at junctions etc.....

You (the driver) will always be nearest to the centre of the road (not your passenger). If you're not. give the steering wheel to the co driver or shift into reverse.

Thank you all for your help:thumbsup: rep left

I find it easier to drive over there than here - the roads are far better quality, there are specific lanes for left/right turns etc that are clearly marked.

Just be aware of your speed, US traffic cops don't take prisoners (some do I guess:lol:) and will fine you on the spot.

Avoid the freeways at rush hours - especially if you're heading near Miami - it's chaos!

Take your time when you get the car to familiarise yourself with the controls, setting up mirrors etc.

You will get an automatic car as well, so you won't have to worry about gear changes.

We lived in Canada for a few years and the main thing I found which took the longest to get used to is your position in the lane, I often veared slightly to the left when drivng as I was so used to being on the other side inside the car.

Also be careful at traffic lights junctions with pedestrian crossings. The light will be green for you to drive at the same time as the green walk now sign for pedestrians!!!! So if you are turning left or right you need to give pedestrians right of way.

A flashing green light at traffic lights means you have full turning privelege ( like a green arrow here).

Four way stop signs = if two people approach together the person who got their first goes first.

It's easier generally. Very wide roads and no roundabouts.

if i were you id drive round the car park for 15 mins to get used to it. brakes lights etc
asfter that everything will come naturally (hopefully)

we r going next week too
fly out 6th

Serious tip.

Remember: Most places in the US you can turn RIGHT on a RED LIGHT.
Unless you see signs saying NO RIGHT ON RED

Yes. I'm sure its no left! (Would be a bit dangerous to pull out into the path of oncoming traffic!)

Definitely turn right on red - don't forget your on the right hand lane, so this will not be crossing traffic

Don't forget to come to a complete stop on a stop sign at a road junction.. they are very strict on that.. seemed daft to me when you can see nothing is coming.. but when in Rome..

Left turn onto a main road did my brain in for some reason.. reminded me of trying to write your name using a reflection in a mirror.

Oh and don't forget you will probably be given an automatic.. they don't like gears over there
