Going to San Francisco Nov 19th V excited!

Yippee, my sister has some almost free tickets left over from working at Vigin and we have decided to go to San Fran to see the sites for 4 nights :-)
Now just need to decide on some cheap accomodation, but so many too choose from. Thinking of booking something cheap which is cancellable and then trying name your price with priceline closer to the time, anyone tried it before? I'm hoping for something in union square or if really lucky then fisherman's wharf but not wanting to spend much more than £50 a night for the room.

Any tips on accomodation, using priceline and sight seeing etc when there would be really appreciated!

anyone stayed here: Chancellor Hotel on Union Square

looks ok and is £57/night for a twin rm

It gets bloomin cold there. We needed jumpers and jackets when we went one September. Wrap up warm!
Try and get your Alcatraz tickets in advance too. Top day out!

When i went there with my school we stayed in the Pickwick Hotel, that was close to the shops and bloomies was just round the corner. Nice enough hotel but quite old fashioned although it did have a gym and computer facilities aswell. But as evil monkey says it has a similar climate to ours so bring some jumpers with you! I was hoping to get a nice tan but ended up wearing 3 layers just to keep warm!

dunno how you feel about hostels, but there is a Hostelling international hostel just off of Union Square which is very nice.

Make sure you take warm clothes..... It gets COLD

thanks guys, yes we realise it will be cold, did NY in early jan a few yrs back (can't be worse than that!)

Pickwick 'French-provincial decor with gold-painted walls and ornate furnishings' hmm, its £67 a night

would prefer to book a cheap hotel over a hostel thanks.

We where there in September too, the weather changes by the minute !

My OH came back last week- the weather was great for him! He loved Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf and they hired bikes and cycled over Golden Gate Bridge and got the ferry back. He loved it so much he wants us all to go next year! Hope you have a great time.

    where does he recomend staying?

He stayed at Intercontinental hotel but it was paid for by work. He suggests anywhere at Fishermans Wharf.

ah ok, thanks. I was thinking union square would be more central than fishermans wharf?

I went to San Fran for the first time last year, early November, and i kid you not it was touching 30°c! So yeah, the weather could be anything.

I stayed at the 'Hotel Carlton', not too far from Union Square, and had a free wine reception every evening

Its all pretty central-he reckons its only a couple of dollars on a tram to anywhere:thumbsup:
Hopefully we're going to have 4 days in Los Angeles then 4 days in SanFrancisco at Easter- if we can get cheapish flights :-D

Stayed here Sept 2008, just off Union square ideally located. Get the DART from airport for cheap transportation, no traffic jams and very fast
Have to agree with everyone else about weather, alcatraz though!. we had 2 day Hop on Hop off pass, absolutely priceless

I've stayed in the Canterbury just off Union Square and would reccomend it. Just around the corner is a great place for breakfast its called "Louis" and its just like "Arnolds" from "Happy Days".
2 places you must visit are Alcatrz and Pier 69 at Fishermans Wharf, but dont do what my wife made us do and walk UP Lombard Street !!

    you mean Pier 39, right?

And as for the trams - i'd say they were the worst part of the city in terms of value for money - way overpriced. Only went on them the once for the novelty factor.

Recommendations for eating out - the lower floor of the Westfield Centre has one of the best food courts i've seen. Go to the steak outlet and have a Yik Yak salad. Amazing.
