Gold selling advice and experiences (£400 - £500 worth of bullion)

I was given 20g of 24 carat gold a long time ago and would like to sell it.
I got a quote from a jeweller for £400 and have had a look online and Hatton Garden Metals are offering £478.07 and Bestpriceforgold.co.uk £517.40.
I know very little about this and what I should look out for/avoid and wondering if anyone has any experiences or advice. Thanks.

Try local markets as I know there was two stalls on ours last week both offering £25.xx last week in cold hard cash with one also saying he will beat any genuine quote. I'd rather get a couple of quid less though and get instant cash than trust sending it (both the gold there and cheque back) through the mail system.

Yeah, I would be happy to lose a bit for cash in hand rather than trusting a postal company (and the Royal Mail to get it there), but locally the best I've been offered is over £100 less than online which is quite a difference.
I live in a small city but hadn't thought about asking at the market, it's small but I will go and check it out - £25/gram is a good price from what I've been looking at online, the only place which is in that bracket is bestpriceforgold.co.uk but I know nothing about them which is a concern. The jeweller in town was £20/gram and another jeweller less than that.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Ring around a few local jewellers

Do you think I could ask them to price match? The jewellers are quite snobby around here so don't want to ask if it's not the done thing. Lol, I have only bought things from a jeweller before, never sold.

I live in a small city as well - but i have heard with gold - its best to go to a jeweller - they seem to give the best amount

Bestpriceforgold take off 10% in a handling fee read the terms etc, also though all these companies say that they your package is insured in the post, yes it is but what about when it reaches these companies they are all limited companies that can go bust with your gold at anytime!
go to your man on the market they usually pay the best prices, there is a man on Farnworth market nr Bolton that paid me the best rates in the area for my gold, and I compared everywhere!

Thanks, I hadn't seen the 10% handling fee with bestpriceforgold, I think everyone is right and the best thing is to take an afternoon in town on a market day (it hadn't occurred to me to check out the market so thanks for pointing that out) and talk to a few places.

Hatton Garden Metals are totally legit and perfect to deal with, many people on here have sent things to them through the post and got the money they were quoted quickly.

Try typing 'Hatton' into the search box and read about people who've used them

I dont know about bestprice, i wouldnt used them just for having that kind of name LOL!

Lol, I've gone off bestpriceforgold after hearing about the 10% handling fee.
Did you (or anyone else) have a handling fee with Hatton Garden Metals? They seem to have a good price and I have heard about them before so feel safer with them than any of the others I have been looking into and pricing up.

I have never heard of a handling fee with them, no.
Argos were selling some 9ct gold bracelets at a misprice last year and we all bought them up to sell on - many people used Hatton Gardens then which is how I know of them. I have still got my bracelets but when I do sell them I will be going down to Hatton Gardens myself as I am in London. They have an actual shop/office you can go to, unlike an internet only company

Hope this info helps, I wouldnt have recommended them if I wouldn't use them myself and I would be willing to send them through the post if I wasn't near enough to visit personally

Thanks so much, if I can't get anyone locally to price match I'll go for them then, I really do appreciate your help.

You wont get anywhere near that price at a hugh street jewellers I expect. When we bought the bracelets they were worth about £220 or so according to Hatton Gardens - on the high street I was quoted between £90-£135 oO
