I'm not sure that there are any free ones.

My daughters an editor and she uses a prog called 'Womble' for taking sections from dvd'd, but it's not free, sorry.

Amuse me - This is a related, but also unrelated question.

If it was possible for you to use the services of a professional piece of DVD editing software for a low fee at an hourly rate (I.e. the length of time you were using it), would you use it? It's not free, but it's theoretically cheaper than buying the software for yourself.

(Not an actual solution, but amuse me if you will :))

If you are using Windows XP it has movie maker built in. Not the best editor, but you can edit the video, add stills, and music or voiceovers. It's ideal for making youtube video's
