Google Phone: "Nexus One" expected to launch tomorrow @ Google.com

Something more on the flimsy side as deals go, but for those of you who haven't seen this already elsewhere, Google has announced a press meeting at Google HQ tomorrow. Their un-surprising surprise announcement is going to be the availability of the Nexus One, Google's own handset running Android 2.1, with a 1GHz processor under the hood. More on the specs: engadget.com/200…al/

Leaked images put the phone at $530 dollars for a completely unlocked phone, and an option to buy on contract in the US, sold directly through the Google website, not through carriers. It seems likely that the UK will have its own pricing structure, but the direct conversion from dollars is ~£330. Pricing source: telegraph.co.uk/tec…tml

Specifications in short:
* Android 2.1
* 130g (with battery)
* 11.5mm thin
* 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 4GB microSD in-box expandable to 32GB
* 5 megapixel camera with mechanical AF and LED flash
* HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100, 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up
* 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display
* Telfon coated body
* WiFi, stereo BT, AGPS
* Digital compass, Accelerometer
* Purpose-built docking station with Bluetooth (probably separately, purpose of BT in the dock as yet unconfirmed)

If, like me, you're thinking about getting one, I'd personally recommend the unlocked device, as it is only a matter of time before Google announces its Google Voice platform in the UK, meaning your phone uses only internet data, and not minutes or texts. You're going to want a new plan when that comes around, and the contract is likely to be 24 months. More about Google Voice here: google.com/goo…tml

The phone itself is built by HTC, though it is rumoured that Google had complete control over the design stage. Photos to follow in the next post. Hands on impressions from Engadet: engadget.com/201…io/

This phone looks awesome!!!!!!

The spec sheet is brilliant, and you have to check out a few of the videos on Youtube and Engadget... it looks like a real winner.

Maybe i'll sell my 3GS for this? Probably!

is this any better than HTC's Hero? So far the specs don't suggest the additional cost is worth it?

I can garantee the the uk price will be more than £330, I'd expect more £400-£500 price range

And thats if its even available in the UK any time this year...

Might want to back that up with some facts or sources there, mate, because no one outside Google can know that, unless you've some insider information you'd like to share?

HTC have historically brought phones here at the same time or before the US. I don't think Google would roll out this device anywhere other than worldwide, but of course I could be wrong.

I'd point to the impossiblity of reading the OLED screen in sunlight as for a reason not to upgrade.

The main reason for me replacing a Samsung HD8910 with the HTC Hero was due to the inability to read the screen while on holiday.

This should be in Misc.

Still want a Milestone, but nobody will sell me one apart from expansys

I've refused to go to motorola after my Razr only lasted 5 months. I'm using a TyTn 2 at the moment, and I just don't think I need a physical keyboard either.

It's not UK based and not an approved overseas merchant as yet and also not guaranteed...........more of a tip.

My Razr lasted 2 years, til I lent it to a mate. Was a **** phone though! I'm after a physical keyboard cos I hate touch screen ones, but it looks like nobody will sell it on a decent contract so I'll have to look for something else.

This just doesn't have any 'wow' factor to it.

It doesn't even support multi-touch:?

Looks like we're still waiting for the google mobile.

It doesn't support multi touch in the native apps the US because nothing but the iPhone can. In the EU it is a very different story, where multitouch is in a different legal position, and 3rd party apps have always been able to use multitouch. The dolphin browser can use multitouch on this handset.

It just looks a bit 'meh'.

Maybe the Nexus Two will be a bit more impressive.

Ideally they'd just put Android on the HD2 hardware.

I agree with the looks, but its Google Voice that I think is going to shake up the industry, not the hardware. Yet.

So is it out yet?

Still want a Milestone though

Press release @ 6PM

Scratch that, its 6PM. I hate time zone conversions.

Bah!

Although I still want the milestone!

I want to like it real bad! but the Screen sounds hard to read in bright light, Multitouch should be a given in new standard phones that are looking to compete with the iphones market share and apparently the colours are a bit poor.

I love my G1 and want another Android handset, this will probably be it, However i cant help but feel it should be "More"
