Gordon Brown promises free laptops for poor families. What an utter waste of money.

Todays news. Gordon Brown is pledging £300 million so that 270,000 families can get laptops for the kids schoolwork. Now when I was at school that worked out at over £1100 per laptop. Gordon, you need to visit HUKD coz you're wasting a lot of our money if you're getting stitched up at £1100 a pop! We could probably save a small fortune from his £300 million and pay for him to have some private maths tuition!

Gordon Brown will promise free laptops and broadband access for 270,000 low income families so that they can better follow their children's progress at school.

In what aides described as a sign of his commitment to "aspiration", the Prime Minister will say he wants every household to have broadband access to the internet.

The aim is to get all families linked up to their children's schools via the internet and access progress reports on attainment, behaviour and other needs.

To make that achievable, he will pledge £300 million of investment to help poorer families who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

Good my O/H can quit tomorrow, lovely.

Brown is continually going on about every home having broadband access-wonder if he has shares in some of the large porn or gambling sites?

the scheme is already in operation.

I still dont get their definition of poor is only 'non-working' families. I'd say its most working families that are poor these days as they dont get all the freebies and have to pay rent / council tax / mortgages!

My mate hasnt worked for 3 years and the DSS told him he'd need to earn £450 a week to break even on what he gets on benefits. Hes currently having £1200 of free dental work and even the dentist said the crowns were fine but shiny white new ones would look better!

His new PC application is in the post already. Its going straight on ebay!

ost working famalies are actually poorer than one that are on benefits, this is not to blame people on benefits but it's true.

The systems broke and need some attention from a conservative goverment:thumbsup:

in case youve been under a rock, there is a salt shortage due to the fact this is the worst cold weather spell in like 20/30 years......plus the fact that there tons of salt "on order" so fact is a lot of this is down to the suppliers not fulfilling their agreed quotas

anybody thinking they are better off on benefits due to a laptop being given to them for childrens benefit needs their head looking at.

So, the shortage had absolutely nothing to do with the fact Central Government have significantly cut the budgets of Local Government? Stroll on.

cant speak for other councils but i know in london they have been waiting on tons of salt due to non delivery hence the 25% reduction in usage to conserve supplies until suppliers can deliver, the suppliers can only dig out 20,000 tons a week from the salt mines

so in answer to your question ......NO not in london

I take it you believe you're correct and have the facts because you've seen it on the internet?

Think about it this way, a council has it's budgets cut, they therefore have to redistribute their internal budgets to adapt to the fact they have less money = less services. It ain't rocket science.

As long as they come with a pre-installed spell checker then i'm all for it.

Yet another reason for the working man to hate Labour.
When will they realise that we are not all equal.

My father has been claiming benefits for around 40 years, the man is obviously too lazy to work and is content having his sky digital (full package), rent paid, council tax exemption and £25 of cigarettes a week. To make matters worse he will be receiving almost double what he gets now as he will soon be receiving a state pension. I have seen many "initiatives" over the years which have rewarded him for his "hard work".

Despite me working 20 hours a week and studying full time he will still be better off than me due to the fact I have to pay rent and eventually pay back my student loan of £4500 a year. I have never claimed benefits and never will because it is degrading in my opinion. There are never any initiatives to reward people in a similar situation to me.

Labour to me are like a twisted version of Robin Hood who will steal from the hard-working and give to the lazy/useless.

Don't get me wrong. This scheme would be great for poorer kids who are unfortunate enough to have such parents, however the chance of these kids getting the laptops or being pushed to use them for the correct reasons are slim.

I will be applying for this for my youngest, but i agree that the money should be spent on all children, not as like many have said, on those that will claim and sell on, it would have been better to have spent the money on all schools, providing every child in school with more IT hours

    You have a point.

In all honesty I feel I am better off being a student than when I was out working full time for several years beforehand.

My main gripe is that people get so much for doing nothing. I have always worked hard for what I have acquired and accomplished in life.

am i missing the point here ........ are these laptops for underprivileged kids so they can better themselves or are they for every person who is unemployed?

why are people whinging about something which is primarily aimed at educating?

well hopefully there will be something in place to make sure that whoever signs up for them will have to be registered with the schools .....either way there will always be a minority that take advantage but hopefully most people will let their kids benefit from this scheme and anybody abusing it held accountable

this is what we should be discussing not just saying "its a scam i get nothing and i work hard" blah blah
