Got a monitor problem, 1920x1080 screen res works with VGA but not DVI.

I know there are a few computer people on here, so thought i would see if you can tell me the problem.

Monitor: Acer H223HQ
Graphics: on board HD3300.

A title says when using a VGA cable i can set my screen res to 1920x1080 without a problem but if i try to use a DVI cable it dont work the screen flashing black every few seconds. Iv rang tec support from where i got the monitor from & they say if its works with VGA just use it that way as i wont see a diff between VGA & DVI imo there is a slight differnce & the DVI is slightly shaper picture.

I can use the DVI up to 1280x1024 before i start getting any problems. My graphics drivers are all up to date etc.

So anyone know what the problem might be please

Bad dvi cable?

You may need to set the refresh rate to 60HZ .

yeah sounds like the refresh rate needs to be set lower as tony said

I have though about that, but if the cable was bad surley it wont work on a lower screen res but it works fine.

Thanks for your reply, but iv already tried that & even went as lower as 56Hz but that didnt make any difference

Looks like you are going to have to try your monitor and cable on a different PC as it sounds like a hardware fault.

Well, at a higher res you're asking it to push through more data, which it might not be capable of.

We need to find a solution faster than the overclocker kids :-D

Was the DVI cable included with the monitor?
What monitor details are there on Catalyst control centre when connecting via DVI at 1280x1024
Are you changing resolution using basic Windows preferences?

Seems to be a well known EDID problem.

Something you can try:
1. Update Graphics Drivers.
2. Open Windows display properties and go to settings tab. Then advanced. then monitor tab. Uncheck 'hide modes monitor cannot display'
3. Use Nvidia/ATi Software to change the resolution, set a custom resolution if you have to.

If it still doesn't work, try the monitor and cable on a different PC/output and see how it goes. The problem seems to be somehow related to Acer monitors and Vista/Win7 (mostly, but not limited to)

A good place to start would be here: hardforum.com/sho…060 (look for posts by evilsofa)
Sorry I cannot be of more help, but if I was you, I would try and get the monitor replaced if it does turn out to be this EDID issue.

Thanks for everyones replies, I'm on iPod on mo so il keep it short n test out some of the methods later.

1. I'm using the cable that come with the monitor
2. Iv tried using both windows & the ATI catalyst software to change the screen res
3. Iv never heard of the EDID problem before, il look that up later but dose any one know if that is the problem would I still get that if I upgraded my grapics card & used the hdmi port on the monitor instead?
4. Il try & set a custom screen res, but can't recall seeing a option for that

I am not sure to be honest, I have heard of the EDID problem quite a few times now but never experienced it myself nor took part in any discussions about it. So my hands on knowledge about this is none existent. Other than reading through all the posts and threads and seeing what other people have done, I am not sure what else you could do.

Although from the little reading I have done it appears to be related to the monitors mostly, specifically Acers.

You can use Powerstrip, I believe a poster on OCUK recommended this software also. Usually it is in the Nvidia/Ati control centre though.

Powerstrip or ATI Tray Tools. Found both useful in the past

I think i can rule the monitor out as the problem as iv used someone else's PC for 30mins with my monitor & DVI cable & it works perfectly fine at 1920x1080 via DVI connection. Was using a 9800GT graphics card in there system.

So im really stumped as to why i can use DVI from my onboard at 1280x1024 but if i go to 1920x1080. It starts flashing on n off at me.

IV tried powerstrip but dont fix the probelm. Iv double checked my drivers are up to date & they are.

My board (biostar TA790GX 128M) is a week under a 1 year old, so i guess maybe iv got the option to RMA or i guess get a new graphics card if i want to use DVI at the higher screen res.

Sounds like a limitation of the graphics card on your PC. DVI being digital requires just a little more oomph than VGA. I had the same issue on my old MacBook Pro until I got the newer one I had to use VGA for the higher resolution.

You might be right but you would think on board graphics that claim to be able to do full HD would be ok with showing it via DVI, going to borrow a mates DVI to HDMI adaptor & see if it works ok using the HDMI port on the montior.

Any difference between the operating system on the machine you tested it on and your own system?

Original Poster

Nope both are windows 7, iv got 64bit version tho. Not sure if it was 32 or 64 bit have to ask mate later, why could that of made a difference

Hmm, strange. Have you tried un-installing the graphics card drivers completely then allowing Windows to find them and install them? (eg. do not install Catalyst control centre).

Original Poster

Nope not tried that yet, but at this stage i guess anything is worth a try.

Will try in a bit & let you know if it works ok

Are you using the correct drivers for Windows 7 64bit including the chipset driver

I Tried that last night but with no joy, DVI keep on flashing on n off at 800x600 with the windows basic drivers & windows couldnt find any other drivers for it, so had to do a system restore to get it back again.

Yeah had already tried that, the chipset is a older version of the graphic drivers that i can get from the ATI website but with with 2 added things but they dont make a difference.

Given up using DVI now went out & got a HDMI cable, only a cheap one for now to test with & that works at 1920x1080 but not at full screen . But after a quick google i found the answer to that little problem there is a option in the ATI catalyst software to underscan & over scan. using that it makes it work at full 1920x1080 at full screen. Not sure using that option if it makes much difference to the overall picture quality yet as im only just getting in to getting HD films etc.

So im glad iv finally got to it all working at 1920x1080, but im still totally lost to why the i was getting problems running at 1920x1080 with DVI

Il be leaving rep to every one that took time to reply & try n help me sort this problem out
