Got into my 3rd year at uni! woop.

How do you work out a uni year average?

I got in 6 modules..

67, 62, 55, 53, 53 and then 40.

The marks in the 60s are a 2:1, the marks in the 50s are a 2:2, and the 40 is a 3rd.
Just find out how many points each module is worth (it used to add up to 120 at my uni so big/two semester modules were 30 points and smaller/one semester modules were worth 15 points), once you know that you can work out the average.

Yeah all worth 20 creds - I am no good at maths mate. which is why i got 34 in my exam which was compensated to 40, i assume marks were took from elsewhere.

If they are all worth the same number of credits then add the 6 numbers up and then divide by 6 for the average, so it's 330/6 = 55, so an overall 2:2.

Are all modules worth the same? Anyway add them all and divide by 6 if … Are all modules worth the same? Anyway add them all and divide by 6 if they're all worth the same. So you got 55 overall. Probably need to re think Uni if you can't work out a simple average though.

Its actually not as simple as that in most university cases

Well, I am hopeful my final year, i can take my best 3 marks from this year, and then presumably add the next best 3 to that! I think a 2:1 is a good degree, for computing anyway!

lol if you did computing you should be good at maths.

good luck for your final year son.

Well, i was looking for university degree calculator's there is a few knocking around. But i can't hack math's. Forgot it all! haha - I have Key skills level 2, which is apparently equiv grade C. i got D at school in math's.

Congrats on passing (sorry, forgot that bit earlier!). A 2:1 is really good, shows you really understand the subject and put the work in, deffo aim for the 2:1 but a 2:2 is still good, you should be pleased with yourself for getting this far and enjoy your last year, it will go scarily fast. What uni are you at?

I can only afford it to the student loans company. I still find myself fairly skint. I get around 25-30 a week after bills ( I do have a job, but thats only 50 a month so roughly 450 a uni year)

Some student's who get it all, get around 70 a week. If only.

Maybe you could look into the grants available and there are all sorts of things like council tax being free and things like that to make it easier, the older you get the more complicated it becomes getting back into education with life, family, obligations, finances getting in the way but don't let it be something you always regret if you could find a way to make it work.
If you have children it might be worth putting a little aside for a uni fund from a young age, so that they have all the opportunities possible available to them when the time comes.

I dont know if anyone here will know this, but second year is 25%, while 3rd is 75%. Is a degree all modules sandwiched together to get the average of all 12?

I have also heard, that it is 6 modules, and they take the 6 best grades for the degree.

My uni was 50% second year and 50% third year so they took the average of all my modules throughout the last two years and thats how they worked out the grade.
You should probably email your tutor and ask him/her, or your course friends might know as all unis are different and can even vary from course to course.

I was hoping i could do 3 modules this year, then the best 3 next year! haha.

No offence mate but how on earth are you coping on degree level computing when you can't average 6 numbers?

I graduated from Leeds in computing 3 years ago and had to re-visit a lot of my A level maths to even get by in some modules. I'm normally someone who defends the argument that education is getting easier but this thread has made me wonder....

Oh and ALL your modules from 2nd and 3rd year will count towards your final degree classifcation grade (to a percentage dependant on your uni, at Leeds it was 25% 2nd year, 75% 3rd year). If was just your top ones surely people would just concentrate their efforts on a certain few each year!

Best of luck for 3rd year, do you know what topic you will be doing for your dissertation yet? Mine was an AI image analysis tool for detecting cars in video streams, my programme sucked balls but thankfully the marks were for the write up and explaining why it sucked balls!

Yep, 'tis very expensive. I came out with way too much debt. Debt to the student loans company and debt to credit card companys. And don't forget the 3 or 4 years of potential lost earnings while you're there.

Having said that, it was the most memorable time of my life to date. Education is very liberating.

Ive applied to Uni, Living at home, got student loans £3000ish a year, Grant of £2000ish, i still get EMA because i turned 18 in July so thats £10 a week and ive got a part time job where i get around £70 a week. Only bills i have is my phone contract and thats it :P

Looks like im sorted as long as my grades are good enough to get in

I'll have to see the tutor's in regards to how they do the degree. Not a clue what my project will be either to be honest. As for the averaging, the uni calculator's threw me off as it mentioned credits and what not. Didn't realize that would do it for me lol

Wrong, in your case all your modules count towards your final degree. In my case there were two methods of working out your final classification -

1. All final year modules.
2. A combination of second and third year modules.

Whichever is higher. So in a sense your right, if you really wanted to you could focus more on certain modules.
Dont think just because at your University "ALL" (as you put it) your modules count that its bound to be the same at every other University. My father in law is a professor at Swansea University and its different there, my sister went to Plymouth University and guess what? different there as well!

I didnt think you got the full maintenance loan if you live at home? Besides, you never ever get the same experience staying at home. Live in halls! lol
