have i started something i shouldnt of have

There should probably be an official old firm thread and keep all this in the one place. I'm sure WMN will beback from suspension soon to tell you exactly why.

@michellelemoo
Neil Lennon is mr & mrs lennons boy

1) He played for Northern Ireland even though he was Catholic. Massive hatred amongst Catholics and Protestants within Ireland including Northern Ireland. Protestants align themselves to the Union (Ireland part of Britain) and Catholics to the Republic (Ireland as independent). The UDA loyalists didn't like a Catholic playing for a predominantly Protestant backed team and sent a death threat to the BBC prior to him captaining Northern Ireland against Cyprus in 2002. He retired from international football.

2) All of the above was incensed as he signed for Celtic at the time. Celtic is known to have a large Catholic fan base with a minority linking themselves to the IRA. It was bad enough for a Catholic to play for Northern Ireland but one who played for Celtic made things ten times worse.

3) He was caught singing anti-Ranger's song in a pub so faced further hatred. As a player he once spat on a Ranger's flag/scarf in an Old Firm match.

4) He now manages Celtic and has a fiery personality. UDA loyalists and Protestant Irish/Scots take a general dislike to his attitude.

Hope this helps.

Didn't know much about it myself until reading up on it recently. It's shocking how sectarian violence of the nineteenth and twentieth century is occurring in 21st century football. It's like The Troubles in Ireland are being revived within Scottish football.

What I don't understand is that the UDA loyalists show allegiance to the British crown and Union. They fight for it when in fact 90% of the English public care less for their own crown than their Irish counterparts do. I consider it as a mask to justify the violence.

Saying that the IRA's methods are just as bad although I can understand the will for freedom. However, the freedom fighters of the 1920s were for the cause whereas the pIRA and rIRA are mindless thugs.

All of this coming from a Protestant lol :P

They cling to history but its all about drug running and stuff now. Even the UDA and UFF (both loyalists) have been infighting.

Things have actually been getting better but this Neil Lennon stuff isn't helping. I think it looks worse to outsiders looking in than what it really is.

Martin O'Neil was a catholic who played for Northen Ireland and didn't have all this hastle.

Neil Lennon said he would love to play for a united Ireland and that's suposedly when the **** hit the fan.

Yeh, that's pretty much it.
The general consensus was "why didn't you play for the Republic then".

Before he joined Celtic he was at Leicster and didn't get that much hassle. However, joining Celtic and making the united Ireland comment made **** hit the fan.

Loyalists used the Troubles primarily as a means to carry out sectarian killing. The vast majority of people killed were killed solely for being Catholic. Republicans did also but to a much smaller extent. It's strange what's happening in Scotland because it's relatively peaceful here. Belfast is thriving, we have Sinn Fein and the DUP iworking together in power which would have been unthinkable a few years ago and both communities are united against the actions of the dissident Republicans. Lennon couldn't have played for the Republic also, it's only since the GFA that this is possible

Lennon himself says in his autobiography that he was eligable to play for the republic until he played in a youth game for Northern Ireland. Probably the biggest mistake of his life.

Ah he must have had family down south then, since the GFA anyone born in the North can play for the Republic even without family links whilst before they couldn't. Yeah it's a shame because he gave so much to them and never got any trouble while playing for Leicester. It was only when he moved to Celtic he became a hate figure, they didn't realise the stupidity of making one of their best players retire from international football

Was thinking the same myself. Was reading that during a game against (think it was Norway) the NI fans booed him every time he kicked the ball and the home fans couldn't understand why a team would boo their own player. Madness.

Darron Gibson.

This is just the most highlighted issue right now, but these issues are prevalent throughout the world but have been confined within sporting realms.

Real and Barca is a ver similar rivalry - though Calans have now become alot more mellow; many Catalans refused to represent Espana and they've been key to their last two major tourney wins with more the half the team being Catalan.

This paticular divide has been brought to the fore over the past few weeks.

It's worse in Turkiye [Fenerbahce & Galatasaray ] and beyond rife in places like Italy and the ex-Yugoslab states.

'Politics' - more ethno-demographic - has also become an issue in India with the inception of the IPL.

Sport and Politics needn't mix. ha.

Even the Rugby (inter-Rugby!) and Football divide in this country stems from demographic and political spheres; and the Mother-Sport is Cricket, from which the two games derive.
