My girlfriend enrolled me on this course- she's doing an OU degree (in Philosophy) at the moment and apparently my lack of philosophical knownledge was too frustrating for her so I'm now four weeks into an A-level!

Didn't get any GSCEs to speak of - I'm really not very good at studying! I do like to argue online and apparently that's useful!

Any philosophers here?

so ur doing an a level coz ur gf told u to lol giles bad times, bad times, is she a good cook? if not book her into a cooking course and tell her that her lack of cooking knowledge is really frustrating you. didnt like the look of philosophy at college so didnt take it!

If you like to argue maybe you should have done a political course, or debating. As far as I'm aware Philosophy isn't really about arguing, it's about making sense of sensless stuff.

lol big thumb disease

Also do you find the course good, I am thinking about doing an OU course, and I know it's all about putting in the effort to get anything out of it, but how helpful are they? Have you actually learnt stuff?

I did a Philosophy AS-Level a few years ago. Found it pretty annoying actually, especially Descartes (although I'm in the last year of a Psychology degree and he's popped up pretty often so I guess he has some clout).

Strange you should use that comparison. I do most of the cooking but I made a similar argument last night when she wanted her computer fixed when I was fixing mine (bad times) - I suggested that it wouldn't be fair if I couldn't cook and stood in the kitchen demanding she made me some dinner...

I'm interested in Philosophy but I would never of booked it myself so she booked and then told me to go... she's useful at making me pull my finger out! We have friends with degrees in Philosophy and I don't like feeling left out

Not really. Philosophy is about constructing a valid argument whether the senseless stuff exists or not. It also discusses religion and I hold very strong views about that... so it's fun

(in essay mode!)

A couple of Mormons harrassed me the other day and it was great fun to challenge them on what the actually know about that organisation - They seemed really concerned when I said I felt sorry for them... :whistling:

I'm going to the local college. SO is doing OU - lots of work but she's enjoying it. I'm just getting warmed up! I've learnt a lot (but then I have been reading her course material too!)

It's good to understand what is wrong with his arguments... like studying a plane that doesn't fly on when designing a plane!
