I currently have a HTPC set up in the living room which I fancy turning into a bit of a console alternative but have not looked at graphics cards in years.

I built the computer earlier in the year with the following components

A10-7850K

8Gb DDR3

FM2A88X Extreme6+

128gb SSD

500 Watt PSU

(will probabaly add a cheap sata HDD for extra storage)

After looking at what I have I have decided I have 150w to spare on the GPU which does limit my options somewhat, I don’t really want to change the PSU yet. I've also decided to stick to AMD for future crossfire options. Another thing to consider is I had a go at the wife for spending money at the weekend and we both agreed to stop buying things we didn't need for a while (lol). I have narrowed it down to the R9 270 (which I can get used for £50ish) or a new RX 470 for around £175, so the question is do I spend £50 now on the 270 or exercise some patience and get a 470 in a few months? Given the system specs would I be wasting a 470 in it?

I would think crossfire benefits would be limited by your cpu if you went for a second 470. I would probably go for a secondhand 970, they can be got for cheap and you can get a very good overclockers version for less than the 470

Unless you've got a lot more in there than listed or a PSU that delivers a lot less than 500W then you're not going to be using anything like 350W. Even half that, 175W, would be a high estimate.

Have you tried gaming on the integrated graphics? You paid a lot of money for them over the otherwise identical 860k so they're well worth a go. They won't run the more demanding games, but they will run a lot of others.

As for the card choice, the 470 is undoubtedly the better card but if the computer's plugged into a TV so that the 270's lack of freesync support isn't a big deal then for £50 it's definitely the more sensible purchase.

A good point not considered, I'll look into the 970.

There are a few things like sat cards etc, but the PSU is not exactly high end so would prefer to have a healthy redundancy.

Intergrated graphics I have used and it does run some games but not that well, I am really looking for something that can be a PS4 alternative (not sure if I am being overly optimistic). The PC was never really built with games in mind, I put the 7850k in it for the (albeit limited) 4k output for films, I just thought I would try and repurpose this box as opposed to building a new computer again (and trying to find somewhere to put it)

Thanks for your recommendation.

It can definitely run at ps4 level and better as the ps4 isn't that great in quality. It basically runs an apu similar to yours with hbm memory

The 7850 is a great card and will play most games on high, they overclock very easily to, have you tried it on games, it will play Battlefield 4 on medium to high at about 40-50fps, far cry 3 and Tomb Raider also play at good speeds.
