Graphics card - Offline / High St if possible

My PC died yesterday and after a fretful day of trying to work out what bit of it had given up I'm fairly sure it's the graphics card. (for more details, see the thread below...)

So I'm now in the market for a new card...

My old card is a Winfast PX8800 GTS 320MB, this seemed to do me alright, but it's probably way out of date now. So in terms of what I'm after, anything that's better than this and hopefully below £50.

Of course being the impatient person I am, a high street bargain would be great (allowing me to pick it up and fit it this weekend!)

If not, how does the card in the deal below from novatech compare to my old one?

Thanks and as always rep left for all helping me sort things out!

    E.M.

That one should be about ten percent better than the one you had but you really need to see what PSU you are running first,.

Good point,a decent psu is a must for good gaming pc, its not just all down to the graphics card,
Good PSU brands: Corsair, SeaSonic, PC Power (600w-750w).

Had site up with a review / spes of my old card and it says "450W" recommended so here's me stupidly thinking it's probably 450W...

Naaah.... cheapskates Evesham slung in a 350W.

I'm not sure how these things work, do power supplies gradually degrade and their output drops? Could it be that my power supply just ran out of grunt to feed my card and a new supply will resurrect it?

Or am I in cloud cuckoo land?

It is unlikely the PSU is dead as it wouldnt run at all but it could have just been running on the limit all the time,You could always try the card in another pc first just to be safe,

Annoyingly the other PC I have only has the AGP slots (and what looks like plain old PCI ones).

So for the card in that other deal (I CAN wait, just don't want to....) would I need an upgraded PSU?

Also, maplins has the next fella up, ]the HD4850 1GB for £90. A bit more than I wanted to spend, but would it be worth the extra cash?

Looking at the reviews I'd guess this one would seriously stretch the existing PSU....

Thats not a bad price for that card but you could find it a little bit cheaper online, You would really be pushing it with a 350w no name PSU though,

If you could wait for delivery you could buy a HD4870 for that price and it would be quite a bit faster but would defintly need a 450w PSU,

Looking on novatech's site I could pick up a PSU from them for £15 or so with a bit more power.

Or there is a G7 580W one on spesh at maplins. Again I'm sure I could get cheaper

£115 for the hd4850+ new psu

    £70 for the HD4830 + new psu

    decisions decisions

    From novatech?

Aaaaah, I see what I'm doing! those canny pc bits makers, enticing me with models slightly better for slightly more cash! I'll have soon talked myself into £200 worth of kit if I'm not careful!

If you spen £40 on a PSU then at least when ypu buy a new pc you can put it in your new pc and replace the old one to sell,i would recommend this and a 1gb 4870 total about £135,

Thanks for all the help guys.

After perusing the websites of maplins and pcworld I'm pretty sure I'd get a no-name PSU at a fairly expensive price. So if I'm waiting for a PSU to be delivered I may as well wait for the card.

With cash as a consideration (seeing as I was happy with my old card) I think I'm going to go for the HD4850 from novatech at £69. Would a 400W supply support this fella? I'd like to keep the bill to below £100, but if not will go for your coolermaster tip.

As always the next step up is always tempting, but as I'd not noticed the shortcomings of my current card, I can't really justify too big a leap!

You will probaby be ok with cheap 400w but i would consider it the first thing to look at upgrading in the future,The 4850 will be a big upgrade from the 8800 so you should be happy with it,
