Noticed it in the last few weeks though have reinstalled Vista twice(once to 64 bit to test it)

My Pc specs are Q6600
VHP 64 bit
4 gigs ddr2 ocz ram
8800GT 256mb DDR3

The problem is that I am getting FPS spikes.

Sometimes the FPS is fine for ps1 emulators then Id get lag spikes and framerate drops that stick, even if emulator is closed and not used, other times I can get perfect fps with no slowdown.

So I just assumed it was the emulator or I didnt have a good enough pc

But what got me going was I reset the emulator values down to minimum and shrunk resolution to lowest(lower than 800 by 600) and still the pc went one frame and lagged even on 2d games.

Then I played World Of Warcraft and it was fine for a few minutes at 60fps(at 1650x1050 resolution I think) then dropped to 50 then 40 then 30)

But there was nothing there on screen, no enemys no spells, no lighting.

I turned around and ran back the way I came and fps went back up within a minute

But a minute later it spiked down again walking where I was a few minutes before with no lag.

Is my graphics card knackered?

no it does this your card is fine
if it dont need it (darkscreen) it slows down

But why didnt it happen on my old graphics card which was also a 8800GT? I never got fps spikes on wow but didnt test it on the ps1 emulator

And when I say spikes on the ps1 emulator it pretty much dies as the screen pretty much freezes, and even saving state, or even restarting emulator means its still slow.

But leave it 30 minutes or so and come back and I can open state or restart emu and its fast again.

Overheating? Framerates shouldn't drop like that in wow, mine sits at a constant 60 in wow with vsync on using an 8800... try all the usual things, clean install of drivers using drivercleaner etc

I just put in my old 8800gt(the one that cost double the price lol) and it works perfectly so far so it must just be the card.

Have you tried both the latest drivers and the ones off the cd?

Have you recently updated the VGA drivers? no doubt the inclusion of the Phys-x within the new nvidia drivers is impacting on some games unfavourably, I'd suggest roll the driver back to a previous version.

Yes I have the latest versions

Its not the drivers if the other 8800 works fine, its a problem with the card itself, it sounds very much like speed throttling due to overheating issues, is it a single slot card? Try checking card temps and running diagnostics with a combination of rivatuner and ati tool
