    Grass Seed or Turf?

I have gotten rid of the gravel in my back garden and want to lay some grass. We are not in a hurry for grass to be ready so i was wondering what peoples' experiences were with grass seed.
The ground is very compact (due to being covered in landscape fabric and gravel) and full of stones and will need topped up with topsoil. We were thinking of digging up the ground a bit to get air in, then dump 1 or 2 tonnes of decent topsoil on, and then spread grass seed. This would obviously be cheaper than turf an the ground is only approximately 4m x 5m.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi there,

Although our grass was primarily laid as turf we have had to add grass seed to it over the last 12 months to thicken it up as it was beginning to look unhealthy. Mini rotavators are available to hire and you will be able to turn over the soil and bring a lot of the rubble/stones closer to the surface so that you can remove them before sowing the grass seed. Garden centres, and some supermarkets sell a product that is combined seed, weed and feed - this is good for grass as it basically does what it says on the box. As long as you water it fairly regularly you should have growth in no time
