growing strawberries from seeds saved from shop bought strawberries

Found 31st Mar 2013
About 6 weeks ago I bought some delicious strawberries from the supermarket and thought I'd save some seeds to see if they'd grow. I followed a video on YouTube using kitchen paper and sealed polythene bag and its worked. They finally started germinating. I know I'm not likely to get the original type of strawberry but I'll be happy with anything even half as good. Will try the Driscoll's jubilie when it comes on the market.

Certainly makes the story more believable X)
Why isn't it believable? Seeds being cultivated and germinating seems perfectly reasonable to me. Might give it a go myself.
Put your ripe strawberries into a household blender. Add one cup of water to the strawberries in the blender and blend on high for 3 to 5 seconds. Try not to exceed 5 seconds of blending time, or the strawberry seeds may be damaged. Allow the components to sit for a minute or two. The viable seeds will sink and the unviable seeds will float along with the strawberry pulp. After the good strawberry seeds settle to the bottom, pour off the bad seeds and fruit pulp with the water. Rinse the seeds and then transfer them to a paper towel (or low-heat dehydrator) to dry. When dry, store the strawberry seeds in a cool, dry place.

If you prefer to use a non-blender method, you can try an alternative strawberry seed saving method. If you dehydrate a strawberry (or let it dry completely), you can use your thumb and forefinger to rub the strawberry so that the seeds fall off. Separate the seeds from the chaff and store in a cool, dry place.
I just got a few ripe strawberries and picked off the seeds using a pointy knife and put them directly on the plate and put on my kitchen windowsill to dry for a few day. I ate the strawberries after picking off the seeds. But I must have a lot of unviable seeds so far only five have sprouted.

Will try your way next time mark2111 than.
Thanx for the info wouterJ

It will work, but you'll need incredible patience. It will probably take … It will work, but you'll need incredible patience. It will probably take until the 3rd year of growth before you will see any fruit.

And then they might be vile. There's good reason why hybrid strawberries are propagated from runners. Good luck if you do try but don't expect great success.
What about a pack of seeds?

Just an update, quite a few more of the seeds have started sprouting. I also had some okra seeds from last year which didn't do too well and I put them on damp kitchen paper on an old fruit tray and covered in cling film. The okra have sprouted within a few days. I just had them on my kitchen windowsill. I have repeated this procedure for other old seeds I had, including old petunia seeds which didn't grow last year. Looking forward to seeing what happens.

If you've got packet strawberry seeds then you should end up with what it says on the packet.
