    Guinea pig question

We have had 2 guinea pigs for the last couple of years.

They were brothers and unfortunately one of them has died.

Anyone know if we can replace him with another male or will they fight?

A little bit of a google suggests that you should introduce them in a neutral area first, (not Switzerland) for short periods of time. That's if you decide to get another male.

Or you could (as has been suggested on another site) construct a small boxing ring with a webcam and make some cash.

You should be ok if you introduce them on neutral ground, they might chase each other but you'll be very unlucky if it amounts to more than that

It really depends on them, although it's not recommended to have two … It really depends on them, although it's not recommended to have two males together as far as I know, don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but we had two girl guinea pigs, who weren't related and when one died the other died within two weeks (neither died due to illness).

Have you ever thought of becoming a Samaritan?

Cheers dcx, I think I remember somewhere reading about the dying of a broken heart syndrome.

As for you davelfc, I'm disgusted - taking advantage of poor defenceless creatures that run around without a clue - that's what NUFC did yesterday - so back to the guinea pigs - how do I set up pay-per-view!!!

    Pig sick?

Usually a Boar will take to a baby boar and most rescues should let you take your guinea pig in to make sure they are ok together .
You could also look at getitng a speyed sow as a lot of rescues now have them speyed to stop people breeding them .Phone your nearest rescue and see what they suggest i think they will be the best ones to advise you and i would not get a Guinea Pig from a pet shop unless you know they are reputable all 4 of mine are from rescues .

You should know full well how to take advantage of publicity. You could give the spare one to Alex to keep his ass warm.

When introducing two guinea pigs, put teatree oil on both their noses. It masks the smell of the other one, so reducing the threat.

We had two males (unrelated, but lived together since very young) & when one died, we kept the other on his own for two weeks with lots of human attention whilst he was grieving (apparently this gives them time to realise the other isn't coming back & be more open to new friends). Then we adopted two male brothers of a similar age to him (so I think they were all about 3 years old). We got a huge new indoor cage for them and kept them separated by wire so they could smell each other & talk. Taking out the barrier to let them interact when supervised, watching out for aggressive behavior & replacing the barrier when neccessary. We also took it in turns with the new pigs to place just one of them with our original one on our knees for an hour or so at a time to make it easier for them to bond without both brothers being together. We were also advised to bath them together as this helps them bond, which we did several times. In the end they all lived together happily, so it can be done.
