and think it went quite well. ive just about got the hang of the changing the gears but im getting a bit confused with steering, sometimes i turn the wheel too much and sometimes not enough but i think i will have that sorted on my next lesson. i drove home along a main road so i cant have done that bad lol

Well done! don't worry to much about it,have a few more lessons and then if you can get a member of your family or friend to sit next to you and practice! the more you do the better:santa:

Wish I still had the book I got too learn with as I would have liked to upload the images on changing gears.

It was a series of hand positions that smoothly moved the gears rather than wrestling with it.

none of my family will let me anywhere near their cars lol

i found gears ok, thing i had most difficulty in was remembering which one i was in without looking! but i changed them alright and smoothly so i was proud of that

To be honest the actual mechanics of driving are quite easy once you get the hang of of it,remember learning to ride a bike it just sort of all fell into place. The road sense is the difficult bit, the best piece of advice i can give is look far ahead and take in all you see.

Try this in the privacy of your room as you'll feel a bit of a wally!!!

Practice your steering on a large plate or tray, remember that:

to turn right you push up from "6 O'Clock" with your left hand to "12 O'Clock"and pull down from there with the right hand to "6 O'Clock". To turn left reverse.

Movement should be smooth and use the full 360o of the wheel.

Practice in between your lessons so you don't waste the time you're paying for!

its really easy to get used to it. first lesson is always the hardest. had mine about 7 weeks ago and passed last week. not hard at all !!

my driving instructor carries a circle tray for this reason

his first lesson consists of using the tray to get used to turning etc

just think what speed your at,

if the engine sounds like its gonna explode and you're close /over 20mph you're in 2nd gear,

if not, you're in 3rd/4th [dunno why you'd be in 4th at 20mph but thats anybodys guess]

if the engine sounds like its gonna explode and you're close /over 30mph you're in 3rd gear.

thats how i do it anyway.

i think it will click better next lesson. i will get there i know i will but first lesson theres so much to take in. i managed to get my speed to 50 on a main road so was proud of that, i would have gone to 60 but didnt want to get ahead of myself

i had 2 1hour lessons a week. and yes i am a natural i just found it really easy to do. and dont worry about getting used to the steering. the easiest way to do it is to say this phrase in your head: "Your hands will follow your eyes". my instructor kept telling me that and before long i was sayin it myself in my head. and it works!!! just make sure you dont look at pedestrians on the side of the road for too long. you will steer towards them:-D

haha best advice ive heard yet! yeah i think im getting there, my insructor tells me to look in the distance rather than the road right infront which seems to work. i think i'll have it cracked next lesson

trust me it gets easier. but defo look in the distance, helps you plan ahead if something comes up ahead e.g mirrors, braking, changing gear, stopping (in that order:)). it really does become easier if you break it down into phases and think about what you're gonna do. plus dont rely on your instructor too much. in normal, on the road driving, try and think what you would do if you had passed your test and were driving on your own. but obviously if you're doing something wrong do listen to your instructor:p good luck with your theory and practical tests:thumbsup:

dont mention the theory! i have a cd rom and have done mock tests and keep failing by 2 or 3 questions grrrrrr. yeah i deffo manage things easier if im left to do stuff on my own and suss it out for myself with just a few pointers along the way

Hope it all goes you lot, for your theory test don't just learn the questions and answers, READ the highway code and Driving The Essential Skills, DSA publications.

Then put it into practice. :santa:
