How about you just settle with the cats? Hamsters are nice and all, but if she wanted a dog for all the doggy stuff, a hamster isn't really going to cut it...

My other idea which is not maybe ideal was get a large tub that will allow the cage to fit in

and then cut a large window in the middle of it and have the lid and 3 sides on it

We dont have the finances for a dog or space as we live in a flat with no garden

Get her a dog smaller than a hamster cage.

i had this and a few of the attachements would b ok for some one with a cat http://www.robstestdomain.co.uk/images/products/habitrail-ovo-pad_01.jpg

would it do syrian hamster tho.

Other idea was get one of those large drawer units,

put hamster stuff in bottom drawer and put cage on the second legde and keep top and remove other drawers, like a unit type thing

dont bother, they smell and bite, they sleep all day and are active at night, not the best pet for a child

my sisters suggestion was get a normal cage and then put that in a bigger cage that cats or dogs use then cat cant get to it

Ditto #5, but just make sure you put it together properly. Ours had more attachments than the one pictured and it was a pita to wash and put back together.. We thought it was right but we came down in the morning to one bit open and resting on the floor.. Hammy had made a nice bed with some of our carpet and a little home inside the leather sofa..

any wire cage will do, hamsters can't get out of them unless you leave the door open or something stupid, my cat doesn't bother with my hamster

the rotastak cages are ok but hamsters like to climb so get a wire one with some plastic tubes attached, most rotastak cages on their own aren't really big enough for a syrian, a couple of dwarfs might be a better idea if you plan to get a plastic cage

That was the one we had. You posting that reminded me of the fact he chewed it and ended up making a pretty big holes near one of the 'windows' (shown mid-way on the left and right tube).. He did have various chew stuff, but still made a mess of it.

I personally wouldn't have another Hamster, the next 3 we had were nightmares (one was the devil in disguise, the next 2 russians died). The first one we had was ace, but it went downhill from then on! Keep in mind the fact you'll rarely see him/her - thats why our son lost interest, he'd usually only catch a glimpse during the week.. At weekends and holidays he got to see him a bit more, but still..
We have guinea pigs now, theyre better for us. Although they obv take up much more room

I did mention guinea pigs to my other half and he was like no, would get a hamster over a guinea pig, even said indoor rabbit and he was like no

(Btw, I didn't mean to sound like I was pointing out the obvious with: "Keep in mind the fact you'll rarely see him/her.." sorry )
Im sure the hammy will go down well Im in favour of the cage in a cage(!) idea that someone else posted. ^ That cage looked pretty funky compared to what else was on offer at the time, but it was a serious pain to clean, it felt like there was a million pieces.. All the connector rings, the tubes in halves, the pods, the house in the bottom.. all the other bits..!

Oh, and don't forget the pic's when you get him/her!

Just dont let the cat near the thing when the hamster is laying eggs.

this is my setup, got the cage on ebay for around 40 quid a year ago, the other things in the cage came from amazon, after a while i cut a hole in the side and connected it to a rotastak space command cage + 2 extra wheels

hamster sleeps in the bit next to the cage, easy to clean out once a week and since he spends most of his time in there or in the rotastak bit, the wire cage only needs to be cleaned out once every 3-4 weeks

Put the cat in the cage and let the hamster roam free?
