Hand Tools - what' is a good brand?

My dad has asked for a 1/4" drive socket set for Christmas. Firstly, I have no idea what this is, and secondly, I have no idea what a good brand is. I've heard of snap-on, but even second hand I'm finding them at over £70. Budget is more like £50, and he wouldn't appreciate second hand. Screwfix have a couple of sets, Teng and Bahco. Are these good brands? What are good brands? Does it really matter?

Thanks in advance...

Check out some of the Halfords sets, I am pretty sure some of them are guaranteed just like the snap on sets.

Really depends on "what or Where" he will be using them.

Around the house / odd job...

Occasionally at work....

Heavy use at work ...

My Brand of choice has always been 'Britool'

p.s. 'Bahco' is not a bad choice

Just get him a b&q gift card and tell him to buy it himself.

Seen a ot of Britool and Bahco, will go with one of them. Cheers guys.

Btw the 1/4" drive is the size of the of the drive ratchet and the size of the socket 'hole'. It is a small size and will only allow the smaller range of sockets.

Usual sizes are 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" ones.

He's been very specific about the size, he's an electrician if that makes sense of it... I've been told to ask for a 1/4" drive socket set, and I will get the right thing... I think I'll get the set from Screwfix... he can take it back if it's wrong.

Solid parts and tools are covered by the lifetime guarantee. Moving parts and mechanisms are not covered by the guarantee.
If there is a manufacturing fault or weakness that causes the tool to fail we will replace it. Natural wear and tear on moving parts such as the ratchet mechanism would not be covered.

That looks fab Greg. Thanks! I would much prefer to get something withgood reviews, speshly when I've no idea what I'm buying.

1/4" is the correct size for the sparky..... I already assumed that when you said 1/4"
I use sockets every second day and I hate cheap / cr*p sets you are doing right by getting him a 'proven' brand. With hand tools you very much get what you pay for ....

He's defintely not into smartprice stuff! I've decided to go for the Hlafords set... but it's not stocked in my local store, I've emailed them to see if they'll send it over. Otherwise it's a trek to Coventry to collect!

Had a look round and I would consider this Britool Set

My choice would be the Halfords set, surprisingly good quality!

We stocked the ship with Teng Tools, our electrician likes this set teng.co.uk/mr1…asp Very good quality.
