    Hard drive failure

Just before Christmas of 2005 I bought a computer from medion.

A few weeks ago the drive failed and everytime itry to install xp it just crashes.

The drive is a Seagate Barracuda: Model: ST380011AS

    It is 80GB

I just went on the seagate website and it says because it is OEM I will need to contact medion. But the PC only came with a 1 year warrenty, what should i do?

I've been buying Medions for years, got the 8800.
Have you checked the pc box for the sticker which says 3 yr warranty as I'm sure they where doing that length warrantys in 2005?

Theres no warrenty sticker but i remember the woman telling me 1 Year.

Oh no you don't. You remember her saying three don't you?

Check this site out, they'll be able to give you the answer. Its a forum dedicated to Medion pc's.

However, even if they say they'll fix it. i've opened the pc up to add/remove bits.

I mean there was no 'open the pc and it voids the warrenty sticker' so it should be okay?

I've had Medion replace a drive before. All I did was phone Medion up, told them the problem gave them the serial no. of the pc and a week later a technician replaced the drive.

When you phone up they will ask you to reinstall the os etc, tell them youv'e done it several times already and that the drive is making loud popping noises. This should prove to them that its faulty.

Btw you opening the pc previously means nothing as the technician is subcontracted

What bits have you added/removed, as this may void the warranty?

I added a graphics card and removed an internal 56k modem, im pretty sure i could just take the gfx card out and put the modem back in as i sitll have it, The hard drive is out now though but i could easily put it back in?

Best put is back as you found it. If you do get a replacement drive it will come preloaded with and image of the original OS and hardware drivers.

I had a Medion PC which I upgraded with several parts, around six months later the motherboard died (nothing to do with the upgrades I'd done) - I replaced the original parts and there was no issue at all getting the motherboard replaced.

If you don't have any luck getting Medion to replace the hard drive at least new drives are cheap these days.

everyone seems to be having probelms with seagate hard drive at the moment, glad I stick to western digital hard drives now.

surely the drive is covered by seagate's 5 year warranty...all my failed have been replaced no probs.

It's an OEM drive - they wont replace it without me going through medion.

aren't all drives OEM...I just changed one that came fitted in a Fuji PC...so are all the non retail pack drives bought from the likes of ebuyer.

Nope - some come with instructions and screws suprising as it sounds. when i do the warrenty checker it says this.

    Yup, Same here!

Every drive i've ordered has been just the drive, No cables or screws.

I've just had one WD 250gb drive fail though, It doesn't boot up at all and I don't really want to send it back to WD under warranty because of the personal Info!

By law and the data protection act they're only allowed to test if it boots, am i right?

I haven't got a clue, I'd imagine so but it wouldn't take a lot for a sly worker to nick a few drives and get them working again.

It was my own fault though as I shorted out the drive!!, Not sure whether they'll except it back or not though! (It failed though.........Nudge nudge....!)

Never heard of that and I've swapped/tested hundreds of drives if not thousands.

sorry I only have IDE's....have a Samsung 120 gig with 8mb cache and a WD 80 gig with 8mb cache...all in excellent order and hardly used cos they've been used for back up storage ..not in a PC.

If you're interested in any of them we can negotiage via PM.
