Hard drive Media Player

Found 26th Dec 2007
Hi, I am looking for a quality hard drive media player but there seems to be loads to choose from.

I am willing to pay in the region of £100 -£150, not too bothered about hard drive size as I would rather get a quality product rather than hd capacity.

Have seens loads in maplins and e bay but just can't see a winner.

Does anyone have one that could comment on or suggest one.

Thanks

Take a look at ]Freecom 350 - this one seems to be the best value for money in this price bracket.
Not sure if ]PopcornHour A100 is finally available here. but if it does then it is one of the most affordable Sigma 8635 based players.

Read very detailed reviews ]here

Do remember that none of these devices will play everything. If you want cheap and cheerful solution, go for first-gen Xbox.

UPD:

Another worthy contender is Ellion HMR-700A which can act as a PVR but can't work with MKV or H.264.
Review is here.

Thanks very much mate for your time in posting these suggestions.

I will defo have a look at them.

I had thought about a cheapo laptop but not a x box, but what I really want is a remote control:-D:-D:-D

Come to think of it can you get a remote that would control an x box?

Going to have a wee look at this idea.

Once again, cheers:thumbsup:

LOL

I am thinking about just going for this

maplin.co.uk/Mod…m12

It seems to tick the boxes for what I download (mainly avi and div x)

Do you have any thoughts or opinions on this?

Cheers mate

It depends on your files, obviously, but generally no HDD player (or network player for the matter) will play all formats in all variants. There is not a word on packet bitstream, B-frames, etc and chipset isn't specified on Maplin's website. However, as it is Maplin, returns will be easy

Also, I am not quite sure if that does make sense to go for USB-only device. I can't be bothered to unplug it from TV, then plug to PC, copy everything, then replug it back. For me, if there is no network, then device is no good

Cheers for the reply mate

I only have a laptop so I thought it would just be a case of leaving the usb cable pluged into media player, then plug it into my lappy when I transfer new stuff over.

I don't mind the turning on and off malarky as I only have one network card and I use the for the internet.

Don't know much about chipsets and bit streams.

In general though does this look like an ok deal?

I can get another £7 off as I signed up to maplins

Cheers
