    Hard-drives - Im completely confuzzeled.....

Hey, i have been looking at external hard drives for a few months because um struggling with space on my pc and need to store stuff which i want to few on multiple computers. i just have a few questions which would be greatfull if you could answer please?

    - Is now the right time to buy one?
(Im in no dire need to get one right this instant i can wait till September but i will need one before uni. i just worried that we are on the verge of some technical breakthrough which im going to miss out on.)

    - Im going to be getting a MacBook, does this have an effect on what hard drive i should buy?

    - im going to be playing films off the hard drive so does it need to have so special quality like really fast? im also going to be transferring large amounts of data frequently

I dont want one which needs an external power supply and it need to be at least a 1.5TB. Obvisouly it needs to be reliable and fast to transfer data. Im not too bothered about price as long as it isnt stupid. Can anyone recommend one please?

The larger ones (1TB+) almost all are powered by mains power, unless you want to pay WAY too much for one.

The new breakthrough you may be talking about could be USB 3.0, and there are a few hard drives which use USB 3.0 already, but again they are expensive. There are also portable USB 3.0 SSDs, but they are also crazy price.

Also bear in mind you need a USB 3.0 port to use USB 3.0 speeds, or it just goes on USB 2.0 speeds.

If you are transferring lots of very large files, then you may have to pay a bit more.

Thank you guys for replying. So do you think by the summer the 1TB ones with no external power supply will come down in price?

I need a large amount as i want to back up 2 desktops, 2 laptops, and a netbook.

amazon does the wd 1tb powered hard drive at the mo for 46.99del good drive....

They are pretty well priced now but as with most technology the price does drift down and you'll prob get more Gb/£ next year.

Not being funny, but it's hardly like you're buying a house is it! If you need it now then buy it now....

Does it need to be portable? A nas might be a good option if you have a few different machines

depends where the 3 machines in question are. 1.5 Tb is a hell of a lot to want to 'backup' or transfer.....!
