My laptops harddrive seems to making a lot of noise compared to normal. As though it is doing a lot of work.

Any ideas what it could be?

Does the hard disk have a SMART test to check integrity of the drive?

Back everything up... good luck

How full is it?
Have you defragged it?

I have 175GB left of the 250GB I think :? So i dont think it could be that.

I havn't defragged it for a while though. Going to Rappy's today to back it all up quickly.

Does not sound like like the problem to me with those figures.
good move with the backup..

Only other suggestion to throw out for consideration is if you are using a programme that needs more ram than you have and cpu is using virtual ram a lot on hard drive? When I upgraded an old laptops ram the hd use dropped considerably.

most likely your hard drive will die soon.
if you have not backed up all important work you may be doomed, so hurry up

there is a program called HDD Regnerator, which can regenerate the bad sectors and in most cases it works a treat. You need to run it at boot time from a CD/Floppy.
It may fix your problem.
A very decent program to back up your hard drive completely, is: Acronis Workstation. It can backup all the hard drive up completely, and then if your hard drive dies, you can restore the image once you have installed the new hard drive. You will need an external hard drive, or another computer on the network to store the image (clone) file to.
I use it in schools and it works a treat, done hundreds of computers with it.
If Acronis fails, then definitely your hard drive has serious problems.
If HDD Regenerator can't regenerate then likewise.

Frow where? 2.5" 500Gb is about £50, 3.5" 1TB is about £60.

Anyway - finally went pop :x after just backing up all of the files :-D

So - phoning insurance on Tuesday and complaining. Its only 5 months old :? And its the second harddrive its killed.
