has anybody managed to setup a second hand sky q box?

Been offered a 1Tb Sky q box and thought I would give it a go but I have also been told that Sky own all the kit and it has to be returned to them. I don't want to buy it and find Sky won't change my card over.
Has anyone else done this?

they do own it so if you paid for it i would ask for your money back. sky only loan the equipment

The equipment is owned by Sky. They cannot be sold.

Not paid for it yet, I knew the thing about Sky keeping ownership but wondered how strict it was.
I know Virgin are the same with their kit but they seldom take the stuff back.

If it's cheap enough it might be worth it to impress the neighbours and / or lift the drive out of it. Can't see the Sky Q Box police levelling your front door to reclaim their kit.

Yeah it's pretty cheap but if Sky are going to refuse to allow my card to be setup on it I won't bother..

I think the difference with SkyQ is that the box never becomes yours even after contract expires.

One plus of that is free engineer visits which (imo) is needed as the SkyQ box is still a piece of 'broken' tech even on latest firmware. Great when it works, but so frustrating when it freezes, also goes into a FF/RWD loop on some recordings that you can't get out of, also on demand will stop downloading and can only be 'fixed' by multiple power cycles. Once my contract expires I'm cancelling and I've been a Sky customer since the '90's.

Yeah, but when the box is sitting pride of place in your entertainment lounge and the removed drive is now hanging off your favourite Kodi device, the neighbours will still be impressed and won't know that it's all a front.

think the q box is cardless?

It's not careless: Primary box requires a viewing card.

As for the equipment, Sky does own the equipment, and if you don't want to return it... don't bother, as long as you're happy with £150-£200 non return charges, fill your boots.

The same would apply on returned equipment audits: External and internal inspections are necessary (just in case that 'type' wants to get their own way).

It's not, it takes a new card which they send before install.
