Has anyone ever been on Venlafaxine medication ?

Found 19th Jan
I've been on Venlafaxine medicationfor about 2 weeks, prescribed by my doctor.
I've been on 75mg once a day for a week and now 150mg a day but I don't feel any different.

I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience of this medication ?

I'd like to know how long it took before you felt it was fully working..

Thank you for your time

I have no idea, but after reading you last thread, well done for speaking to someone.

I haven't taken this particular drug but I have been on similar, these type of drugs can take a month to take full effect. Hopefully they will work for you but as you maybe aware it can be trial & error with some of these drugs.

Thank you very much

I've been on venlafaxine also, for MDD and PDD after trying many many other medications for the same problem and I also felt nothing! I was sick frequently after taking the medication for the first maybe 2 weeks and I tried it on one strength for 4 weeks and another, the highest strength for 3 weeks as it can take between 2-3 weeks to begin to start showing some development. However no matter what, I just couldn't gain any difference from the medication. It may just be that this isn't the medication for you, if you do want a medication that has a higher chance of working then it is worth asking the doctor to refer you to a specialist as they will talk to you and help pinpoint exactly what the problem is and exactly what medication is needed within the wide variety of options. Doctors tend to only give a generalised medication for a generalised problem whereas if you went to a specialist they will be able to go through the ins and outs and specifics with you. Stick with it for 3-4 weeks I'd say, making sure you take it properly and if you still find that it isn't doing anything then it is worth mentioning to your doctor. Do feel free to contact me if you want to talk or ask any questions!

That's great advice..Thank you so much. how do i get to see a specialist ? Did you see a specialist ?

I have several years ago. When my husband died a couple of years ago they told me it was now a fourth choice drug but was recommended in some cases but I don't remember which. No anti depressants are quick fix and you don't just wake up one morning feeling better. It takes a few weeks and is gradual. If you feel it is not working, go back to your gp and see if there are other drugs you can try. Good luck

I'm sorry to hear that.. so I gather I need to be patient and keep fingers crossed they help.. I know what you mean that there's no quick fix but I'm expecting one because u feel awful but I need to get back to work because I'm worrying they'll get rid of me or stop paying me

Yes I did see a specialist at a local hospital, well as local as possible; that was specifically for mental health not just a hospital that offers help for everything. The way I went about this was simply raising to the doctor that maybe it is a good idea to see somebody that would be able to spend longer amounts of time with me and talk to me about my specific problems and where they might come from or are they triggered by something etc, what medication I've already tried that hasn't worked (so we could rule out any medication that for example may alter serotonin levels as many did not work before) and by eliminating certain ones and highlighting ones that may have a higher chance of working. The doctor agreed there's no harm in that and electronically referred me. Maybe 2 or 3 days later I received a letter in the post inviting me to an appointment at the specialist hospital and it was simple as that!

It can take months to be stabilised and find the correct dosage. Early days .. But hang on in . X

I'm trying my best but a 24hr day seems like a 48hr day... thankyou for your support

Thankyou very much! Anything to help anyone else's journey I guess. If I had somebody to properly asking questions to do that I wasn't so much in the dark then maybe it would have been a bit of an easier journey. Always here if you need to talk or ask questions

goodnight all. thank you for all your personal experience's and support... x

This Poison should be banned, It is Evil and does nothing only makes you so numb because it is probably killing you, It takes away any feeling or zest for life even your appetite will be destroyed, Most of these drugs are nothing but unproven poisons.
My advice would be take a holiday in the sun and start taking a high quality Spirulina and or a Moringa leaf Supplement,Both are brilliant and will change and improve many aspects of your health.

Good night Smarty121.

Unfortunately I have a wealth of info concerning that medication and others. PM me if you need any advice.

Good luck.

You won't suddenly wake up feeling better, just better able to cope. It's a long slog, I've been through it twice. When I was first ill I had severe post natal depression. They sent a specialist psychiatric nurse once a week to see me for an hour just to talk. My health visitor used to come out too. I did see a psychiatrist but you have to be in a seriously bad way to get that these days. It's a postcode lottery. Don't worry about work, you've far more important things to worry about. My employers were very supportive and were able to help me access a lot of extra help. You've done the most difficult bit, just stick with it. It will get better.

so glams a doctor?
Meds affect everyone differently, give it just over a month but be aware that it might not be what works for you..only proven poison I know used in medicine is lithium, imagine how mad some folk would be lol...

I've tried therapy, exercise, meditation, aromatherapy, light therapy...most of em,,,,didn't make a blind bit of difference...same with some Meds, been on almost all antidepressants, beta blockers,benzos__imagined avoid them though they're physically addictive, several mood stabilisers and anti physchotic...finally worked the correct balance and dosages to be able to function...and not be a mad person....not saying drugs are the answer for everyone just that they were for me.

don't take what anyone says as gospel, your mental health is yours so own it,the good and especially the bad.

read up on your conditions some time it can help.

good luck and maybe hunt for a forum relating to your issues, hot UK deals ain't the place.

I'd love to see the proof spirulina cures depression.

I'm A student nurse (mental health) a week isn't long enough to see much difference give it a month an if there's no change speak to your Dr. It's often trial an error untill u find a med suitable for u

Wow. Everyone, good work, I hope things work out, yes as many have said the medication can help to take the edge off things and hopefully allow you to function at least and then iron out things when you get back on track.
Doesn't work for everyone I hear, everyone is different and like others have said mental health affects people in different ways, not all symptoms are necessarily the same.
They are meant to take about six weeks they say to start taking effect, just hang in there,
I agree with what others have said also about worrying about your job, I understand it's a worry but try not to let it bother u they should be understanding.
Not saying spirunila is a cure or anything but when I read that I thought cool. That's a good thing to take anyway a wonder food. I didn't know about any mental benefits only from the fact it has a high protein content if you weight training.
Nutrition is helpful and exercise however, also exposure to daylight for vitamin d. I've always found that helpful and when I get back on track I always revert to exercise and it lifts you, at the moment I'm getting non of the above but always found that once on track was the only thing that kept me sane and more able to function.
As someone said about this not being the site for these issues I did come across health unlocked a few years back, at one point it was the only thing I was doing, reading it kept me sane at the time and the feeling of being able to help at the time.
Now I don't know what's right or wrong or , I'll stop there anyway hope everyone is ok and things start to get better

I'm on these at the moment and have been for a 2 months after being on Sertraline for a year. I changed because I started to feel low again, but now being on the Venlafaxine, I've asked to go back on Sertraline.

The reason why is because my sex drive has gone from really high, to zero, and being a man, I have tanks which if not emptied, can aggrovate me and put me in a bad mood! I also found I had more of an appetite.

I'd go back to the doctors and tell them how you feel. But also, it really helps to talk about stuff to someone who will listen and care. I'm happy to PM you for a chat if you need cheering up or if you feel you need to get some stuff off your chest in confidence.

takes about 2 weeks to have any effect 8 weeks for full affect . made me very ill on it

Your comment epitomises what's wrong with attitudes towards mental health these days.

To answer the op's question - yes I was on it whilst I was in Hospital during the summer of 2000.

I started on the less potent stuff via my GP, but that didn't work. I ended up in Hospital and eventually ended up taking this stuff (most of the other patients on ward 4 in the QE being treated for depression were also on the same stuff)

It takes a while to work, but it did work for me. However, as with all drugs, there's no guarantee.

17 years on and I'm still alive, so ignore the haters that say it's poison!

If you like having no stiffy and getting fat then this is available at your local GP. Also this will give you the 'I don't give a crap attitude'.

Whatever..

Being realistic though it is possible it might take you out of this pickle you seem to be in.

Remember they are all just serotonin boosters.(they keep the good stuff flying around you're brain for longer periods of time)..

well, not being able to get a stiffy (as you put it) and getting fat.... Peeps that are genuinly drepressed have little to zero interest in sex or exercise. How depressed were you? Not very, I'm thinking...

frankly you are speaking rubbish and you should keep your 'advice' to yourself. different people react differently to drugs prescribed for this type of condition and clearly you aren't a cpn or a psychiatrist so you really aren't qualified in any way to be giving advice. have a nice day.

about four weeks to kick in. a bit longer for 'fully' make sure you take the meds when you are supposed to. not before or after the recommendations and don't miss any.

good luck.

It depends what you call depressed. Walking into a doctors office crying begging for help? Is that bad enough?

I definitely didn't want to exercise but had to work or I would be living on the street.

And yes I did still want to look at good looking women and have some feeling.
