Nope you need a HD Player to play HD Movies.

HD DVD data are stored as "pits" which are much smaller than the "pits" used to hold standard DVD data. Consequently, a laser of much lower wavelength is required to read the smaller pits. The red laser on a DVD drive cannot pick up the smaller pits. The blue laser on a HD DVD drive has a wavelength of 405nm which allows reading of the small pits of a HD DVD drive. Red laser on a standard DVD drive has a wavelength of 650nm.

uh oh I just bought 2 hd dvd's! my dvd player says hdmi on the front, is it hd do ya reckon?

You'll be lucky to find any now. Few months ago they dropped to £49 but sold out quickly. Few and far between now I'm afraid!

HDMI is a high bandwidth interface capable of transmitting video and audio that requires high bandwidth such as HD content but it does not mean your player is capable of playing HD DVD. HD DVD is not the same as HDMI - one specifies the type of video and the other specifies the interface for transmitting the video. I suspect your DVD player has the ability to process the video to a higher quality format which requires high bandwidth transmission - hence the HDMI interface.

thanks, guess who's going to be listing 2 brand new hd dvd's on ebay later lol

It depends on the HD DVD - some were combo discs where one side worked as an HD DVD and DVD on the other side but not many titles were of this type.

John

I've just read on the back of the case that it'll only play on hd dvd player..... should've read that before buying it whoops

If you've got a 360 there have been some deals lately for HD dvd drives for about 20 quid. Cheaper than standalone player.
