HD is dead, so 2009, get ready for Super hi-vision

Yesterday, the BBC broadcast a gig by British band The Charlatans in Super Hi-Vision between London and Tokyo, its first ever live transmission using the technology.

A specialist camera, one of just three in the world, was used to film the band's live set, while an audience watched in a different room on a 103-inch plasma TV, developed by NHK. Another audience in Tokyo watched the gig on an even bigger screen.

NHK hopes to start broadcasting in Super Hi-Vision by 2020, although no TV set exists that can fully support the 7680x4320 pixel signal, as current 'full HD' sets only display 1920x1080 pixels.

The Japanese broadcaster has worked with the BBC's Research and Development division to compress the massive video signals for Super Hi-Vision. At full resolution, the service transmits at a colossal 24Gbs, compared to around 16Mbps for normal HD.

So you are saying HD is dead because a much better resolution will be broadcast in 10 years X)

I think that was a bit of a given

Stretched picture and black bars @16:9 1080p thanks

If no TV exists that can support the resolution then how do those watching know if it looked any good???

And instead of glasses you have to wear a full body suit (groin attachment optional).

I know that the UK Wallander TV Series was filmed with the RED One camera which is 4,096 horizontal by 2,304 vertical pixels and as mad as it sounds, this series looked outstanding on HD, basically it was downscaled to be broadcast.

Expect Wallander to be benchmark for future.

new beta max?
