Yeup, TV as monitor... This will then obviously include using it for movies.

Can't comment on the hdcp though...

Do you mean using the tv out? or is it hdmi out for hd movies etc and the tv out for just using the tv as an monitor which isnt hd, if you understand what i mean?

HDMI carries the sound and video through one cable, with DVI or VGA it just carries the video signal and you need to ALSO use a sound output to the TV as well. HDCP is to do with watching protected content such as bluray through your graphics card to a device that should also have HDCP ability.

[edit] oh and all of the outputs HDMI, VGA and DVI can cope with HD quality video... depending on the card of course, but all newer cards should cope with HD quality.

Ok cool so i have a 9400gt with hdcp with dvi vga and tv out so if i connected up to my hd tv through a dvi to hdmi cable would that work? what about sound or would the tv out work better?

HDMI is the connector - not the cable. So if you only have DVI or VGA, you would have to use EITHER of those for VIDEO, plus have a sound output to the TV, if not then you won't have sound as there's no way to get it from the PC to the TV.

eg.

PC -> TV (DVI output through a DVI to HDMI cable) + sound cable from PC to TV.

Or get an Ati Radeon card as HDMI/DVI out on them carries sound.

I would have suggested that, but he only just bought the GPU that he is enquiring about hooking up to a TV... plus it's only certain models of the radeons that can have sound through the DVI via an adaptor (has to be the official one from them, something to do with the connections inside the adaptor I was told) - anyway I have one of those, it's an HD2400XT card. But like I said, he's just bought a card (thought it had HDMI, but it doesn't) so is now looking at how to connect it up to his HDTV to get picture and sound.
