....thinking of going but have a fair travel....are they worth it? Any advice appreciated.

It's more of a mine than a cave.

But are they interesting? How long do they take to get around?

Twenty years ago it was pretty boring. Haven't been since. I think it was dug for the limestone. There are similar but more extensive workings under Bath. The only interesting thing about the tunnels is that the hellfire club thought it was great fun to have parties down there, but that was a long time ago.

Oh dear, not sure what to do :?

I have not been, but a friend of mine has been with her 3 children a few times and recommended it to me. Her eldest who is 13 said it was boring (but as he has been 3 times, maybe just fed up with it). The other 2 who are 10 and 8 said it was great..

If you want a really good day out, it is worth considering going to Warwick Castle. It would be about 90 min drive from Hertfordshire, but if like us you use the free entry to warwick Castle vouchers from this site (like we did) you save £20pp. They have daily knights on horses jousting, battle displays, period rooms with wax works, a dungeon, jugglers, archery, falcon displays, shot a ball of fire from a huge catapult. All staff are in period costume and character. It is just the cost of your petrol and £3 to park in the castle grounds. Bring a picnic with you in back packs as it is expensive to eat there. We had a fab day out there, but go early as we arrived at 11am and could have spent longer there as lots more to do.
