Help! A computer virus is ruining my degree...

    Hi all,

Thanks for looking at my post. I'm having some trouble with my laptop and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so it seems I have a virus - XP Security Centre 2010. It's designed to look like an Windows XP security programme, and at first I thought it was.

It is blocking my access to the web and is throwing up pop-ups and warning signs every two minutes requesting that I buy a licence in order to get rid of worms/Trojans/evil computer gremlins ect. I cannot get to add/remove programmes, I cannot system restore, it is strangling AVG 9 so that doesn't work either.

When i've googled 'XP Security Centre Virus' it seems that plenty of other people have had the same thing and that it is a pretty nasty virus. However, I'm struggling to wade through all the rubbish and bad advice. A programme called Malwarebytes keeps cropping up in forums again and again, is this something I can trust?

I'm pretty keen to get this fixed asap as I am in the final 2 weeks of my degree and desperately need to write essays. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks

    Andrew

I got rid of this in a simple manor, it seems like its not been programmed that well.

System restore back to before it was installed.

I've been dealing with someones computer this weekend that had this evil git. Problems are; not connecting to internet, sometimes system locks on windows start up, apps won't run etc. Well I had a look round and found numerous sites including ]THIS one.. Whilst it was helpful, it seemed hellish long winded.

What I decided to do was boot in safe mode (which worked fine) ran some AV/spyware apps which removed a few nasties, then I deleted the entire TMP and TEMP folder contents under all names in documents and settings.. this seemed to clear some of the roots being used.

Could then start in normal mode and I could then run MalwareBytes anti-malware, spybot search and destroy and Esetnod32. This seems to have cleaned it out, but I imagine every system may differ slighty depending on what software is installed.

    Worked for me though.

You must have got in early. it usually blocks system restore and blocks any downloads hence me advising to download and run in safe mode:thumbsup:

MWB will destroy it, seen it quite a few times, so do as the first post says and you'll be sorted.

Might need to run it in safe mode though.

Thanks for the advice guys, will try Malwarebytes now and see how I get on...

I dealt with a laptop with this problem at the weekend. The REAL Windows Security manage to strangle it enough to allow Malwarebytes to open and remove it.

Pretty nasty ******, disables all the programs and installations

this is not a virus and shows no typical viral code so no av program will stop it and due to its diversity many anti malware programs fail to identify it before installation as well.

I hope you guys have ran the malwarebytes etc afterwards.

If you've not removed the offender it'll probably be rearing it's ugly head again soon :?

Yep of course, but at the time I couldn't install it so obviously checked afterwards.

    I will check mine too.

My friend's laptop had this and it even messed up everything when running under safe mode!

Had to use a Linux based anti-virus boot disk in the end which sorted it out. Doesn't really matter now though as he had his laptop nicked last week!

I had the same thing . I managed to do system restore straight away. Then when i started up MSE popped up and said i had 2 trojans and deleted them.

why is it that just about every virus related question on here is from an AVG user?

So what do you use then?

I got this too but removed it using rkill and malwarebytes.

Its a nasty wee batsard when it installs itself and blocks most anti spyware programs from running.

    ps I use NOD32
