Help - Advice Needed! Can new employers find out your previous Salary?

Hi,

A bit of a random one, but i'm looking for some advice. I recently went to an interview and they asked me what my current package was so I told them about my OTE Bonus scheme and when it came to my actual salary i told them £2k more than what it actually was, on the basis that i had earnt this through over achieving my bonus and getting paid overtime in busy periods. So overall my salary + bonus that i disclosed in the interview totalled my actual earnings for the last financial year on my P60.

I have since been offered the job and I am now wondering whether or not my current salary will be disclosed from my current employer when a reference is requested?

Am i worrying with good reason, or do people think it will be ok?

Thanks for any advice in advance :-)

It Will Be Ok

They'll see you're lying as soon as they see your P45

They can find out by the tax forms P60 but it will only give a figure and not differentiate between salary and bonus, so you should be alright. Also, they don't know, you might have just had a payrise!
It'll be fine, if you are perfect for what they are looking for, then it shouldn't matter.

Congrats on the job offer by the way

Thanks. It wasn't a deliberate strategic lie. My thinking was that if i had of told them my true salary plus true bonus they wouldn't have made me the offer I wanted and i would have infact been worse off, because although it isn't a guaranteed sum of money i know for a fact that i can earn the 'extra £2k' through over achieving my bonus and doing overtime. I won't get paid overtime at this job, so surely i am sensible to take that into account as i will still be expected to do additional hours outside of work for no extra pay (its an office job), whereas at my current job any extras hours would be paid.

would my salary be disclosed on my P45?? I'm not worried about my P60, as i said before, my actual earnings for the year were as i told them, but it was just because i had earnt more on my bonus and through overtime that my earning were £2k more, which i then built into my salary for interview purposes.

Everyone inflates their salary when going for a new job. Prospective employers usually only ask about it so they know what to offer you or to find out if you are within the pay bracket they want. I've even given inflated salary estimates at in house job interviews. How els are you going to get the wage you want

Think about it, new tax year..... Unless you've hit your bonus and done a fair bit of OT they'll be able to work it out on earnings to date, ie 1 months wages ;-)

Wouldn't worry though tbh mate:thumbsup:

Yeh that's a good point actually, but luckily i will be covered as i had 37hrs overtime in April's paycheck (month 1), and i will have bonus in May's paycheck before i leave (month 2), so i'm well covered!! Phew.

Cheers for the advice :-)

Your P45 will show what you earned for the TAX YEAR, it doesn't tell them your actual salary. My BF got a pay rise in January by £5k a year - this of course isn't reflected in his P45 as he only earned the new amount for 3 months.

So don't worry - you could have had the 2K given to you at the end of the tax year. They wont know.

Thank you. I feel bad now that i lied, but it wasn't a massive exageration and it is comparable to my actual earnings, but in heinsight it probably isn't a good idea to lie before you even start off, but i obviously wanted to secure the best package at the same time, which i may not have got if i had of told them the truth.

Oh well fingers crossed and thanks everyone for your help :-)

Fair comment. They would have probably factored in people inflating their pay
