Its just me not been able to make my mind up so any help or advice on me getting a iphone for's and against's and things to look out for when buying a second hand one would be brilliant, rep left for those who do many thanks......

My advice for the money they sell for 2nd hand buy a new one from a retail store. If you buy elsewhere then after a month the seller claims on the phones insurance saying it's lost or been stolen you end up with a blocked iPhone and you are out of pocket , it's a common scam

As for a jailbroken iPhone they connect to iTunes no problem but you must always wait until there is a new way to jailbreak each new firmware update , a new one was released a few days ago with no jailbreak yet. I'm typing this from my iPhone I think they are great , mines not jailbroke as I don't need it to be and I pay for the apps I use

Jailbreaking will not "damage" an iPhone, all it does is remove the restrictions that Apple see fit to put upon your choice of apps to go onto your phone. Some (a minority!) of apps that you download from Cydia can make the phone unstable but you can restore it to "Factory Settings" from iTunes (but you lose the jailbreak and the unlock if it has not been permanently unlocked by O2). The big problem at the moment is that Apple have just released firmware 3.1.3 and this stops the Blackra1n jailbreak and blacksnow (the unlock part of Blackra1n) from running. You can do the jailbreak with Redsn0w 9 but no unlock at the moment. Therefore you must get a secondhand unlocked one for use on Virgin or buy a new one and hope it has firmware 3.1.2 or earlier or wait (could be a long one!) for a new unlock solution from Dev Team or Geohot.

The good thing about buying an older (like manufactured before week 40) used iPhone is that those ones do not have the new boot loader chip which forces you to re-connect or "tether" the phone to your computer and re-run the jailbreak each time you need to re-boot the phone.

Jailbreaking is the main reason I have an iPhone as it opens up a whole new world of free apps and customisation.

    Hope this info helps!

Hi, i have had two iphones on o2 and now vodafone. Never had a problem with jailbreaking either.

Sometimes they do crash but nothing serious. The only problem now is the new iphones have new boot roms so basically if you switch the phone off you need to plug it back into a computer to boot back up!
Can be a pain but I dont ever turn it off unless the battery goes!

You can reset a jailbroken iphone anytime if you change your mind.

One point to note i know two people to take iphones back to apple due to other problems, once plugged into there computers they can tell when and how many times the phone has been jailbroken. Not sure how true this is but worth remembering!

I am not sure about having problems with plugging an iphone into itunes if is has been previously registered. I am sure their will be away around it but not 100% about this.

Also remember it is an expensive piece of kit, most people on the likes of ebay will be selling for genuine reasons but some will be looking to get rid of a problem item.

It would be nice to save money and get one cheap but their is a lot in their to go wrong if it hasnt already, maybe worth looking for one with some warranty left?

    Hope this helps.

guys thanks for the very detailed replies but again now i'm 50 /50 as all posts show for and against and the jailbreaking post is very informitive but has completly lost me oh and i'm on o2 not virgin, the title meant i'm a iphone virgin i.e not had one before Also the comment about rebooted i take it thats for jailbreaks not just the phone when you turn it off at night like i do

I must say, for me there is no real negatives for jailbreaking as if u change your mind, you can always restore back to Factory Settings. I have 7 iPhones, all of them Jailbroken, no probs with any of them except for the very latest 3GS one which needs to be tethered for a re-boot and drops signal occasionally. If you turn off a Jailbroken newish 3GS (one manufactured after week 40ish), as in "Power Off" at night, then you will need to reconnect to your PC when you turn it back on.

If they say in 1 or 2 months time they have lost or had the phone stolen and claim on any insurance the phone will be blocked by its imei number , all you will be left with is an ipod touch , it could be used as a phone abroad nothing else . The claimee will then have your money and also a new iphone sent to them as a replacement under insurance

If you are on O2 , buy one from a retail store to save the hassle and also for warranty . The O2 simcard you have will work in the phone without jailbreaking it . If you want to jailbreak it you do risk warranty

Ring up O2 and ask them to switch you to the o2 iphone simpicity , this is still a £20 per month rolling 30 day contract . You still get the same minutes/ texts but also get the free wifi from btopenzone / cloud and web bolt on included

No I've never been on a O2 contract other than the regular simplicity rolling 30 day contract. When the iPhone simplicity 30 day deal was posted I just called O2 and got them to switch it over to the iPhone version , it was no hassle and the price is exactly the same

Best of luck and enjoy the iPhone
