Help - Brakes for a childs bike

Having some real issues with the brakes on my little one's bike I bought. It was a put together one and the instructions for the front brakes are rubbish.

The issue I'm having is that when you press the front brake, the pads don't grip the wheel. The pads move, but don't grip it and I'm unsure as to which part I need to be tightening and moving. Any ideas? First comment will have the photo of the front of the bike.

    Thanks in advance.

That bolt bottom right on the caliper, loosen it.

Hold the pads against the wheel with one hand as if the breaks were on.

Pull the brake cable through the hole in the bolt, then tighten.

    Done.

Undo the nut at the bottom end of the cable (10mm spanner usually ) whilst holding the brake pads against the wheel..from the bottom of the cable, pull it quite taught and tighten the nut.. might be best if you have 3 hands !!!....hope this helps...also the little nut on the threaded bit at the top of the brake should be screwed to the bottom..this is a lock nut..

I did try the bolt which allows you to move that cable, but the cable is so tight that you can't pull it down, and I'm not sure how much give it will take without snapping?

You aren't snapping that cable by hand, think of the force it can take stopping a human being going at speed.

Yeah that's true. I guess I just need to use some force with this cable then? How far do I pull it down?

When loose, knock the bolt back a little with the other side of the spanner, this should free the cable. It will probably just be squashed against it.

Thanks, most of you have been really helpful with the exception of the token troll that you always get, needing to be entertained Thankfully they've been removed.

So it's definitely that cable that's the culprit here right? Is it just trial and error with how much you pull it downwards?

and the screw on the right hand side wants to be screwed in all the way has the pads get worn u just ajust that no need to pull on wire

Pull it all the way, with pads against the wheel, tighten up the bolt.

Then tighten the screw above (move it downwards) this will give you the slack needed to move the wheel.

If the cable is tight I find gripping it with a pair of pliers and pulling really hard does the trick

You may want to get some better pads too, slightly softer that will stop better

This is how you setup side pull brakes. You need to adjust the brake lever as well during the installation.
