Help! Brasso soaked into the carpet!

Found 29th Nov 2009
I was using some Brasso metal polish this morning and I must have not screwed the lid on tightly enough because I've just come back in and there is Brasso all in the carpet!!! Arrgh!

Like a 10x10cm pool. It looks like it's soaked in pretty good. I think I can almost see the the carpet warping as if there is a bubble underneath it.

What should I use to clean it? Please help! It looks awful and smells even worse!!
I've soaked up with a cloth as much as I can but it seems to be in pretty deep.

hmmmm - insurance job methinks!
Brasso will probably have melted the latex/vinyl backing.

I live in a rented student flat so I want to give it my best shot before I call my landlord & lose my deposit!
Get a rug
I's just give it a good rub with white soap to try and break up the oil thats in brasso. Just keep rinsing and re-doing it.

I got some Vanish carpet cleaner which I'm trying.
Do you think the powered stuff will be any better?
Is it coming up shiny?

sorry couldn't help it.

Cheers, it says try washing up liquid as that breaks down grease/oil
The best way to break down oil based liquids is by using a dilute form of acid, so a lemon or vinegar may help.

your best bet is to go to carpet right and get a new piece of carpet for the room. its got to be cheaper than losing your whole deposit.
Was the property furnished? If so cut the damaged spot out and replace with a piece from under some furniture that was already there, making sure you stick it down and the surrounding part too.
