    Help choosing a beginners telescope

    Hi,

I am thinking about getting a Telescope that is ideal for a beginner, but not so basic that I can only see the moon. I have looked at a ton of sites now, but must say I am getting confused. Are there any experienced astronomers out there that can maybe help.

I quite like the Skywatcher Explorer 130, but is it any good and will it be that much better than the telescope currently in Aldi?

    Thanks

    Mark

Sorry I need to read the rules ~I was only trying to be helpful and save someone a few pounds which is what I thought this site was about.

This is good for a beginner, my daughter got one for her birthday. Use the free planetarium software from Stellarium stellarium.org/ as well.

    Hi pugw$sh,

will this allow me to view planets as well as the moon?

    Thanks

Sorry for the long delay in answering, but yes you can see the planets. The moons of Jupiter are visible, as well as Saturns rings. A lot depends on local light pollution and atmospheric conditions. We took it up to the moors at the back of Bolton and got much clearer views once away from the town centre light.

Also have a look at this site pulsar-optical.co.uk/cat…tml the Venus 76 was recommended as a good package.

skywatchers a great make - got my dad the 130 last christmas. Its a brill bit of kit - although quite complex to use. You need to sit down and give it a lot of patience.. not just rig it up and look at the moon like i thought..
    also it weighs a ton
