if i put a dvd in the drive it will start to read it ( drive light starts flashing and fan turns on) but then after 4 seconds it stops.

also nero and disc juggler dont recognise the drive.

oh and its a internal drive in a laptop, rever replace or opened.

Mine did that this morning as it said I didn't have a decoder so I just downloaded one from microsoft.com and it worked perfectly. All their downloads are free so if you need drivers or service packs etc just get them from their or download another version of media player for free too!
Soz not really a techie but it worked for me so give it a go.

    Hope it works.

Go into Control Panel then into Admin Tools then Computer Management, lower down the list you'll Disk Management, check to make sure that it has a drive letter assigned to it.

Also check your Device Manager to make sure that the drivers are installed properly and that Windows recognises it as working fine.

control panel, hardware and sound, then devce manager and then click the right click on the highlighted thing and select scan for hardware changes. job done, now in my computer it should be there.

EDIT: this is for vista but it should be similar for xp.
