If you get the Santander/Plymouth be prepared for a lot of chavs....I did it last year when coming home from living in Spain...absolute nightmare! Loud drunks on a ferry was a pain!

Visit Madrid and Barcelona and avoid Costa Del Sol (I lived there) - very tacky and not very beautiful!

Rhonda is worth visiting. Little village with an amazing bridge and views is worth going to if you go down them ends.

Useful for calculating fuel costs in France

Ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao if thats still running. 7 Hours from Bilbao

Edit

If you plan to drive through France then watch out for the tolls, so many and very expensive.

I drove from manchester to valencia a couple of years ago and stopped in Paris,Lyon,Bezier,Barcelona,Valencia. Try viamichelin.co.uk/. Im not sure how accurate it is now but was great when i used it.

One of the best holidays i have had!

You can get a long way without using tolls but the toll roads make the drive easier. If you are sharing the drive you may be able to plan effectively using the Route Nationales or Bison Fute. Dont know much about Spain. If you are doing the Route Nationales I would suggest taking a spare petrol can just in case you let your fuel get a bit low as unless you have a french fuel card you may find it difficult in get fuel in out of the way places.

Spain wasn't too bad for tolls but France was. I think our route was planned well, i guess we could of missed out some tolls but i assume it would of made the route a lot longer.

forgot to mention, the website i listed above also shows toll costs.
