If you find yourself locked out of your Windows box because you lost or forgot your password, here are some things you could do.

* First, do you have the administrator password? Login as an admin and change the password of your user ID. (Obvious Adams?)
* NEW: If you are an Administrator user, and are logged into Windows right now because your PC is setup to log you in automatically, but have forgotten your password in fact, and would now like to change it — well, Windows requires you to know the old one. However, there is a brute force way to change your Administrator password. Open a Command prompt (START — > RUN — > then type “cmd” without the double quotes) and then type the following command:

net user username newpassword

Remember, if the username has spaces in it, then enclose it in double quotes, e.g.,

net user “Samuel Jackson” pulpypass

This would change Samuel Jackson’s password to pulpypass provided Samuel Jackson was an Administrator user.

Can you log on to admin or is that the password you require? Because you can easily change a users password if your on the admin

]Try this download

You will have to put it onto a bootable cd and hey presto

Edit, ignore that, it used to be free from somewhere

I have just done this on a friends laptop, they were the only user and forgot their windows password.

For some reason this web page is no longer available but here is a cached version of it. No images but you can get the jist of it from what it is telling you.

I have the files on a USB drive, I can send you them if you want, all you have to do is copy the exact files to a blank usb drive, insert the usb drive into your PC and then follow the instructions in the link above, takes about 2 minutes and removes the password and keeps everything else as it was on the PC.

Or you can burn them to a cd or DVD but I did not have any handy so i made a virtual dvd and then copied them to usb so it thinks the usb is a dvd.

cheers mate, will try that now...... rep coming your way

If you saved it from work, and they know you have it why not ask IT what the password is, if you have bnot changed it since?
IT would have a list of all the passwords if they are any good

That would make no difference the computer would have to be connected to the workgroup to authenticate the user name and password , funny one this but have you tried just pressing the ENTER key while leaving the password field blank , my old machine let me do this

It would work as what i said was the IT department would know all the passwords, as a good department would have a list with the PC name and the password in, what your talking about is different to what i am talking about

Is there anyway to use this just to "view" the password without resetting it?

Yep.

But for a USB drive for those who don't know how to make one using a virtual CD piece of software I have already done that bit so the files are just ready to copy direct onto a blank usb drive, if anyone else wants the files already iso'd then PM me and I will send them.

the administrator account is generally hidden boot into safe mode to access it.

I know what you mean, but good places do, i had lists of all PC details and the places i have worked have been the same, so that if someone was off we could still get in without any trouble, and people were locked out of changing there passwords, but perhaps thats cos i work in the software business lol

sorry but you are completely wrong. Worked in IT for years so know my way around. Tech support would have your network passwords but its impossible for them to have your windows login passwords unless they set them up.

bigflump is right.

Nope, passwords are encrypted through a one way hash process. They can be reset by deleting or overwriting the information, but they can't be read back out, (so no, you can't find someones password out without them knowing about it using this method... )

ophcrack actually reveals the password without resetting it;-)

Obviously we had a list of all the network logins, but every computer also had a local admin account which we had the un/pass for incase we needed to login if the network wasn't working on it.

20 years in IT programming/project management on military contracts, done a bit of support too, but didnt like that much tbh

Passwords are heavily encypted and buried within the system, including super-userids who are just userids with admin rights, if someone forgets a passwrod they're reset, they're not stored on a nice big list somewhere :-D
If they are, then im thinking security flaw :whistling:

subscribed.. may need this thread later
