Help - How to keep a dog happy?

I have got a 16 week old dog. I am finding it difficult to find ways in which she can keep herself entertained. I have never had a dog before and would be grateful for helpful ideas. ---REP will be given!!

Other than Kong have you any suggestions of what I could give her?

Take it for regular walks? Most dogs are more than happy for this, aim to tire them out so that they're too tired to run around in the house barking all the time.

Other than that buy toys for them (and you) to play with, etc.

What kind of dog have you got?

    got a lab.

she already does 3 walks a day - its not recomended that I do a lot cos of hip problems later.

she seems to be a very bright puppy and constantly on the go.

one of the best things we found that we knew that they would play with when we weren't there is one of those hollow balls with holes in that you fill with treats.. they have to knock the ball around to get the treats out.

They are I'm afraid. Once you get her not to pull at the lead try cycling with her as it will then be at a pace that will be better for the dog and also give less impact on your hip.

one of those thick ropes with knots in and hard rubber chewing rings.....kept my lab entertained for hours:thumbsup:

    Haha maybe!:-D

I was at a b&b once, the owners used to fill an empty milk carton (the plastic ones) with any leftover food from guests breakfasts and give it to their dog, it was there for hours trying to get it out.......

he is young you will have to be strong he is playing just like a puppy sould be ? be firm and dont give in as in time it will get better ? have you got a garden

Once the dog is adult and its bones have fully formed give it as much exercise as you can throw at it, It is after all a working breed.

My grandad had 3 chocolate labs, that were all gun dogs, in the shooting season they worked up to 10 hours a day and they thrived on it, I would love to know exactly how many miles they would do in a day beating game and retrieving it.

yeah i meant the dogs hips - i am fit "young" and healthy

Dogs love lots of company... are you at home during the daytime with her?

Does she have her own blankets and toys?

Play fetch with her fav toy with her she will probably toss it around in the garden by herself also

My dog sits by my feet while I'm on the computer, lets me sink my toes into her tummy lol

i thought you shouldnt exercise a dog for more than 1 minute per week old it is until 18 months old?
i have a golden retriever pup who is 11 weeks old, the plastic milk carton trick works as do plastic plant pots

I have been told 5 mins per month of its age, so at 16 wks no more than 20 minutes a day walking due to the soft bones.

My dog loves the soft toys that look like ugly aliens with rope for arms and legs.

He also loves empty new flower pots which cost very little. An empty 500ml coke/fanta/sprite bottle also keeps him happy for a while.
