Help I don't know what watt PSU I need!

Hey I'm building a computer and I have no clue what size power supply I need. Info on the net has been contradicting so I just need some help. My build is as follows:

    CPU: AMD 1090t BE
    Mobo: Asus m4a89gtd pro
GPU: HD 5770 (possibly crossfired at a later date)
Case: Fractal design R3. Fan controller and 2 120mm fans (may add more if it needs it)
Heatsink: Coolermaster Hyper 212+ 120mm fan.
    RAM: DDR3 2x2GB Corsair XMS3 classic
    HDD: ?
    Sound card: Asus Xonar DS.
Optical Drive: DVD drive of some kind.

Any recommendations would be more than appreciated. Thank you.

around 500 should do it, will also give you some breathing space aswell.

There are a few websites that calculate how much you would need, cant remember it though

Hey thanks for the reply. It recommends 431watt. There were no inputs for fans etc. though so maybe its more? Any suggestions on what I should go for in that case? I would like a modular PSU.

I was looking at something like this Antec True Power.

    Would that be overkill?

For crossfired HD 5570 and a 1090t, 2x3.5" HD and one optical drive 36A on the 12v+ lines is the minimum I you should be looking at (unlikely 3v+ & 5v+ is going to be an issue). The only down sides to having a overspeced PSU is cost to buy, efficiency is much lower on low usage (which is most of the time) and power wasted (heat).

Ok thanks. So given what you have said and the spec of my build what would you suggest?

500 or 600, 600 if you are serious about crossfire. Make sure that isn't a cheapo no-name 600w either as efficiency is crap on those.

Well depends on many factors and what is a priority for you. After it meets my requirements (power wise) for me its noise, spending a little more on a PSU that wont **** me off is a huge bonus (but if it were a pure gaming rig then it wouldn't bother me). For me it being modular means nothing as its all hidden in the case, but for many its important.

For me this (I have the 550w version, none modular) ticked all my boxes. Yes it was £20 more than I would have liked to have spent, but £20 well worth it. Here is a test of the 750w supply.

Ok thanks for that. I had looked at the hale90 series. It seems to be £89.99 on the today only page. I'm on a bit of a budget so would you recommend i spend the extra on that one over the antec modular PSU i originally posted? Noise isn't too much of an issue. The fractal R3 has a noise insulating lining so whatever i choose it shouldn't be too bad.

dcx_badass I will check it out thanks for the suggestion.

Yes Antec PSU are great so yes no problems recommending them as the one that that DX above recommends and at £55 makes it excellent value. It's all about choice (which is always nice to have!). As mine is my main PC it might be doing one intensive task then be just reading an article or programing for hours which uses next to no system resources so still having 88% efficiency (as apposed to 70%) when running tiny loads is important to me. Will I ever make the £20 back probably not, but I've save my sanity and a little electricity and done a little bit for the environment.

As a general rule if it fits your power requirements and has been 80plus certified you cant really go far wrong.
