Help in finding the right SLR

    Hi all

Just hoping someone out there can help.

I am considering getting a digital slr camera, my friend has one (sony i think) and the pictures it takes are great.

Problem is I dont really know what i am looking for, the only thing i know i want is that the delay from pressing the button to the picture actually being taken on my current digital camera is quite slow and very annoying so an improvement on that would be great.

any help/tips would be gratefully received.

    thanks

All DSLRs will take the picture the moment you press the button.

Just get the cheapest if you're after that. I can guarantee that you won't find a consensus on which camera is best. People are tied to a manufacturer and don't normally budge.

Usual advice is to check them out in the flesh as they all have a different grip that can make holding one more awkward than another. Personally I think you can adapt to any type after a bit of use.

Sorry, should have stated that. Probably around £300 ish.

I started out with the Sony Alpha 200 which is a solid camera, it also has the benefit of being able to take the old Minolta lenses so help cut cost down. Plus with this fitting you could always buy a better camera from the Alpha series and the lenses would still fit. The Alpha 200 is now no longer made but the Alpha 230 is available and can be sometimes found on ebay for around £250. Hope this helps

Was just going to say it's on Argos at £269. Seems a good buy.

I'd personally get one for that price. It's new from a reputable seller with a certain guarantee. I personally rate the Alpha series and it is a brand I am going to stay with as i'm always happy with the results. Get one have a play if you don't like it take it back

All DSLR's suffer from lag when you press the button

All cameras do - but on a SLR/DSLR it usually measure in single milliseconds - with a point and shoot it can be upwards of half a second. I'd also recommend a low-end Sony Alpha, good pieces of kit + plenty of second-hand lens options.

Canon 1000d but then again I love Canon cameras.

I would suggest going with the basic model from Canon or Nikon, that way if you really get the bug you have plenty more options for upgrading lenses and other kit. I have a Canon 450D but I think even they are still over £400. How much is it for the 350D these days? Is that even the cheapest model or is it the 1000d?

Mostly the kids and he dont stay still for very long, so most of the time i get the back of his head.

Just get a cheaper compact. You can get one with better shutter lag I'm sure. No point really forking out for DSLR unless you're really going to get stuck in.

A230 for beginners, its got a nice user interface which explains what the different functions are how u can adjust them etc

Doesn't the entry level Canons and Nikon both have this too now?

plus you can use the old minolta lenses which is useful

Indeed - the argument about the larger back-catalogue of lenses for Nikon/Canon I don't really buy. A quick look at ]dyxum.com reveals the hundreds of lenses that will work faultlessly on a Sony Alpha. Nikon and Canon both have used exclusive new mounts and lens series for their digital lines, whilst the Sony mount dates back almost 30 years, with many of the highest-quality optics being produced in the 1980's. I have bought many lenses off ebay, including a F2.8 70-210mm for £25 and a couple of examples Sigma 70-300mm for similar prices, some in excellent quality; whilst you can spend £600 for a new example, you certainly don't need to!

NB These lenses from the 80's and 90's are also, naturally, full frame 35mm lenses, so if you ever upgrade to a full-frame sensor, the lenses will continue to work.

I have a canon 20D which i bought off ebay a couple of years ago, i prefer the xxD range over the xxx(x)D range purely due to the size, i have large hands and it's much more comfortable. Like someone said earlier have a play with them and see which one works out best for you.

I can thoroughly recommend the 20D and should be pretty cheap by now, stick a 60mm macro lens on the front and i couldn't ask for more!

Although.... again as mentioned previously the camera is the first of many many many things you will want to buy afterwards, picking the right brand is important. I would go for Canon, Sony or Nikon though

    well then, i stand corrected.

Don't get me wrong - Canon, Nikon and Sony all make excellent cameras, and obviously any owner of one series is likely to be biassed towards their own, just in my own experience the Sony mount is actually not that hard to find cheap yet very good lenses and accessories for. I agree if you want to spend top dollar on the very best lenses Nikon and Canon may be better (and better value) but I reckon Sony are probably the best bet if you want a cheaper setup with second-hand lenses....

I've got all my old Pentax stuff waiting for me to take the plunge

Ok, just not to the same degree compacts do. I can't say I notice it at all on my A200.
